JACOB G. BINDER, BBOE'Y,
SINK-ID STOP.
Application filed March 4, 1924. Serial No. 8%,908.
To all whomitmay eoncem:
Be it known that I, J'ACOB G. BINDER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bromley, in the county of Kenton and tate of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sink-Drain Stops, of which the following is a specification. 1 My invention relates to improvements in water stops for sinks, bath tubs and the a part turn in one direction for retaining sa1d stopper in an elevated position and a part turn in the opposite direction for permittin said stopper to be lowered for stopping tie flow of water from the sink into said drain pi e.
Another ob ect is to provide a water stop having means for retaining the stopper in desired position without the use of sprmgs.
My invention consists in providin a vertical fin extending longitudinally ot a stemconnecting a stopper and a strainer; in providin a slot adapted to receivev said fin where y when the manual operative means connected to the strainer of my water stop is elevated, said stem and stopper are raised therewith and when said stopper is positioned at a predetermined point. said manual operative means may be rotated a part turn, whereby the lower end of said fin is adapted to engage a portion of the water stop and remain in fixed position relative to downward movement thereby permitting the water to flow from the sink into the usual drain pipe and when it is desired to close the outlet leading into said drain pipe sa1d manual operative means may be rotated in an opposite direction whereby said fin enters said slot thereby permitting said stopper; to be lowered into engagement with its seat.
- My invention also consists inthe details i of constiuction and in the arts and combi- 1 nation and arrangement 0 parts as herein j set forth and claimed. i i
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top view of my sink stop;
Fig. 2 is a section of the same taken on a line correspondin to 2-2 of Fig. 1 showmg the lower en of the drain pipe; broken away and the method of connecting the same to my invention;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of in improved stopper stem showin in side elevation; an
Fig. 4 is aside elevation of my stopper stem showing my longitudinal fin in end elevation;
Fig.5 is a section of my sink stop showin the stopper in closed position; I
' i 6 is a section taken on a..line correspon 'ing to 77 of Fig.5;
Fig. 7 is a plan view of disk 11;
Fig. 8 is aside elevation thereof; and
Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the duct.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated and which shows a preferred construction I provide tube 1 received in opening 2 of usual sink bottom 3. The tube is retained against downward movement by flange 4 integral therewith and in engagement with the sink bottom and is retained against upward movement by lock ring nut 5 threaded to the'tube and in close engage s5 ment with the lower side 6 of sink bottom 3. The lower end of tube 1 is connected to usual drain pipe 7 having flange 8 at its top. The under side of flange 8 is securely engaged by flange 9 of lock ring nut 10 threaded to the lower end of tube 1, and is adapted to be tightened for respectively drawing pipe 1 downwardlyand drain pipe 7 upwardly in engagement with disk 11 and washer 11 intermediate tube 1 and drain pipe 7. Disk 11 has circular openings 12 therein having flange 13 integral therewith and extending downwardly at an angle my longitudinal fin 65 till ed position the to adapted to provide water tight seat 13 for stopper it connected to the lower end of stopper stem 15 by nut 15 threaded to the stem received in hole 16 in web support 17 intel with duct 18 having flange 19 fitted in annular groove 20 in the upper end of tube 1 and retained flush with the top of sink bottom 3 by threaded connection 21 with tube 1.
Stopper it is preferably formed of a tubular rubber block it having downwardly converging outer walls and rests between a concave convex metal plate, (threaded to stem 15) and nut 15' threaded on the lower end of mid stem.
Circular strainer 22 is fixed to the top of stopper stem 15 and is adapted to slidably fit in duct 18'. When stopper it is in elevatwith the top of sink bottom 3 as shown in Fig. 2. A plurality of ertorations 23 in strainer 22 permits the ow of water and fine waste matter therethrough.
Bail 24 has knobs 24 respectively integral with arms 25 respectively extending downwardly through holes 26 in downwardly dished central portion 26 of. strainer 22, to permit convenient. finger grasping contact with the bail for the purpose of rotating stopper stem 15 and vertically adjusting stopper 1t. Duct 18 is screwed into and out of tube 1 by bail Qt.
Stopper stem 15 has vertical fin 27 inte ral therewith and extending longitudina ly thereof and adapted to be received by slot 28 in web support 17. semicircular lug 29 integral with the web support'has one side regimering with one side of slot 28 to prevent stem 27 traveling past the slot when stopper stem 15 is rotated.
When it is desired to lower stopper 14:
from its position, as shown in Fig. 2, into seatin engagement with seat 13 of disk 11 bai 2a is grasped and rotated toward the left thereby through strainer 22 and stopper stem 15 fin 27 is rotated in engagement with lug '29 integral with web support 171- Strainer 22 is then pressed downwardly thereby permitting fin 27 to slide downwardly through slot 28 which permits stopper 1a to be forced into seat 13', as shown in Fi 5, thereby stopping the flow of water an other materials from the sink into drain pipe 7. p
When it is desired to open the passage leading from the sink into drainpipe 7, bail 2a is pulled upwardly thereb en a 'n' knobs 24 with the lower side o"t strai ne i" 2% whereby stopper lid is elevated from its seat 13. When the top of strainer 22 is flush with the top of sink bottom 3 the lower edge 30 of tin 27 is designed to be slightly above upper side 31 of web support 1? whereby rotation oi? bail 9% toward the right causes pin 2? to move from its vertical position of circular plate is flush or ermitted.
ininoie over slot 28 and by engaging the upper side 31 of web support 18 thereby retains stopper la in an elevated position and out of engagement with seat 13', as shown in Fig. 2.
l have, therefore, invented a simple, practical, economical and effective device for the purposes intended and which may be attached to articles of various designs and types wherein it is desirable to provide means for stopping the flow of water therefrom without the inconvenience and crude methods employed insupplying a stopper which projects upwardly from the bottom of the sink or other article to which it may be applied.
An advantage of my invention is that the stopper is considerably lower than the level of the sink and it is out of sight and not in the way when Washing dishes or using the sink for other purposes and by simple manual operative means the flow of water from the sink into the drain pipe may be stopped nother advantage of my invention is that the parts of my invention such as are disclosed may be manufactured from material adapted to withstand the continued efiects of water without deterioration and, inasmuch as l employ no resilient means such as usual springs which have heretofore been employed for the purpose of re taming a stopper in a desired position, my invention is not likely to get out of order. Neither does my invention interfere with the flow of water from the sink into the drain pipe as there are no parts adapted to catch waste materials and clog the passae thereof.
ile l have shown and described a particular construction and combination and arrangement of parts, it will be understood that my invention is capable of modification without departing from the scope or spirit thereof as defined in the claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
