Description

PATENT 'D OFFICE.
HENRY HAMMOND, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE LUBRICATORS.
Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 99,082, dated January 25, 1870.
To all vwhom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY HAMMOND, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Oil-Cup; and I do hereby declare that .the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon` Figures 1 and 2 are top views of two different forms of the improved oilcup. Figs. 3 and 4 are verticalsections of the same through the middle of the cup.
Like letters in the several figures indicate like parts. l
My invention consists in furnishing the oilcup with a conical valve, A, which is operated by a screw, E, and regulated and controlled by an index, G, attached to the head, so that any desired quantity of Oil may be allowed to pass through the aperture B tO the machinery. The valve A is at the lower end of the stem C, which works through the cover Or top D of the oil-cup, with a screw, E.
Attached to the head F of the screw is an index, G, which serves to show theamount the valve A is opened. It also serves as a clamp` screw tO hold the head F iirmly in any desired position when set. The point of this index can be set at any point of the graduated arc 0 l 2 3, Src., Figs. l and 3, which numbers are intended to show the number of drops passed in a given time through the valve A.
H is the cap Of the feeding-hole7 which is removed to fill the Oil-cup. In Figs. l and 2 this aperture is shown in the top of the cup. In Figs. 3 and 4. a different arrangement is shown. The feedingtube a a passes through the stem C, and the cap H is placed upon the top of the head of the screw F. The cap H is furnished with an airhole, b, which admits the air to supply the place of the oil expended.
I is a screen, for the purpose of separating any impurities that may be in the oil and preventing their reaching the valve A.
The Operation of my invention is as follows:
Vhen the valve`A is closed, in the position;
shown in the drawings, the index G is at zero of the scale 0 l 2 3, Snc., and no oil will pass through the valve. If, now, the index be moved to 1, by turning the head of the screw E, the valve A will be slightly opened and one drop of `oil passed through in ten minutes, or some other given time. At 2, 3, &c., two and three times the same quantity passes through the valve, and so with the other graduations. By this means I am enabled to regulate the flow to any desired quantity.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with an oil-cup, the cap or top D, screw-valve stem E, feeding-orifice a, cap H, having an air-hole, b, and set Or index screw G, working through the head F.
HENRY HAMMOND.
