OIL-CUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,995, dated November 29, 1887.

To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. MERsHoN, of Bahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented new and Improved Oil-Cups, of-whieh the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in oil-cups, and has for its object to provide an oiler adapted for use upon moving bearingssuch as crank-pins, cross heads, and eccen trics-whereby an ample quantity of oil is advanced to feed when in motion, but none when .the machinery is stationary.
rlhe invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
Figure 1 is a centralVerticalsection through the oil-cup, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
ln carrying out the object of the invention the oiler isconstructed with a cylindrical body, A, preferably of glass, and a base-plate, B,
having an annular groove, b, in which one end of the body A is adapted to enter.
A tube, C, is made integral with the inner side of the base-plate B, adapted to pass up through the center of the body and screw into a top plate, D, having an annular groove, d, in its under side corresponding to the groove bin the base-plate. Thus the upper edge of the body A being entered in the said groove d, and the top plate, D, fastened to the tube G, as aforesaid, the body is firmly clamped between the plates Band D and a reservoir, E, fored, adapted to hold the oil or`lubricating- The lower side of the base-plate B has a nut, E', formed centrally integral therewith. and al threaded collar, E2, integral with said nut, as shown, and in the collar and nut an opening is made in alignment with the opening of the 'tube C.

the same, the wick being held in suspension by means of a wire, e, engaging it in any suitable manner, the end of which wire is passed through small apertures c in the tube and the ends united outside.
The amount of oil to be fed is regulated by compressing or relieving the wick, accomplished by the pressure of screw G, passing horizontally through the nut E. The screw is of even diameter, except at its extreme inner end, where it is slightly reduced, thus in no way interfering with the use of a wrench in placing or taking off the cup. When thescrew is carried inward, the dow of oil is reduced by pressure upon the wick, and vice versa.
In the top plate, D, an aperture, d', is made,
' through which the reservoir is iilled, which aperture is covered by a cap, H, having a central projection upon its under side adapted to be screwed into the upper end of tube C, which tube at that point is interiorly threaded, and the said cap is provided with a slot, d, in its periphery, purposed to register with the aperture in the top plate when desirable to uncover the aperture d', so the cap need not be removed.
The oiler is operated by the motion of the engine or machine, causing theoil in the reservoir to splash up into the apertures a, and so against the wick, which absorbs and carries the oil down to the bearing.
Additional apertures a leading into the wick may, if found desirable, be made near the bottom of tube C, within the reservoir E, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The combination, with the body A, the top plate, D, having an aperture, d', the revoluble cap H, having a peripheral recess, d2, the base-plate B, having integral nut and collar Ef E2, and a regulating-screw, G, in said nut, of the central tube, C, having ports or apertures a, and the wick F, held in said tube,
substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes herein set forth.
