UNITED STAIEQSLWIEN'I @FFIQE DAVIS MARINSKY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COLLAR-SUPPORT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Davis MARINSKY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar- Supports, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to .which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to supports or sustaining devices for garments, and particularly for collars worn by women, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device or devices of thisclass designed for use in connection with collars composed of thin, flexible material, and which will operate to hold said collars in an upright position; a further object being to provide a device or devices of the class specified that can be easily and economically made and applied, and which consists of a retaining device composed of fabric and adapted to be secured to a collar and which can be washed or laundered when the collar is washed or laundered, and a flexible strip or member adapted to be connected with the retaining device and to be detached therefrom when it is desired to wash or launder the collar. I am aware that devices for this purpose have heretofore been constructed but such devices have been open to object-ion. The articles to which they are mainly applied when laundered are starched and when ironed it is impossible to open the pockets for the insertion of the stay member without moistening `the outer ends of the pocket members, thereby removing the starch. Further when so moistened the width of the pockets is so nearly that of the stay members, it is exceedingly difiicult to insert the stays in the pockets, causing great annoyance, while the removal of the starch causes the collar to sag to a greater or less degree, detracting from its fresh appearance.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside view of a collar of the class specified provided with my improved support or sustaining device 0r devices; Fig. 2 a similar view of one of my improved collar supports or sustaining de- Specfication of Letters Patent.

vices detached from the collar and showing the same on an enlarged scale and with part of the construction broken away; Fig. 3 a transverse section on the line 3-53 of Fig. Q, and g-Fig 4 a view showing the resilient or elastic member detached from the retaining device.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at a. in Fig. l a ladys collar composed of flexible and light or soft material, and in the practice of my invention I connect with the inner side of the collar a plurality of my improved supportsl or sustaining devices l) in the usual or any preferred manner.
My improved support or sustaining device or devices consist of a. strip or strips b2 of any suitable fabric, the end portions of which are folded over in the same direction and parallel with the body of the strip or strips b2 to form fiaps b3 of predetermined lengt-h and said flaps are stitched centrally and longitudinally to the body of the strip or strips Z22 as shown at 5*, the edge portions of said flaps i713 being left free as shown at b5. I also provide a flexible and elastic strip or strips c composed of' Celluloid, rubber orany other suitable material, and the end portions of which are provided with central longitudinal slots c2, and the length of the strip or strips c is approximately the same as that of the body of the fabric strip or strips b2, after the flaps b3 have been folded and formed as shown and described.
In practice the fabric strip or strips b2 are secured to the inner side of the collar transversely thereof and in the desired position after which the ends of the flexible strip or strips c are passed beneath the flaps b3, in which operation the central rows of stitching at b4, by which said flaps are secured to the body of the fabric strip or strips b2, pass into the slots c2 in the ends of the strip or strips c as clearly indicated in Figs. l and 2, and the flexible strip or strips c are, in this way detachably connected with the fabric strip or strips b2 and may be detached therefrom when it is desired to wash or lannder the collar and may be reapplied to or connected with the said strip or strips o2 whenever necessary.
It will be understood that the fabric strip or strips b2 are preferably stitched to the collar and remain permanently connected therewith, but said fabric strip or strips may be connected with the collar in any desired nianner; and it will also be understood that my improved collar supports or sustainers may be made of any desired length and inay thus be adapted for use in connection with collars of any preferred width.
The outer corners of the inner ends of the fla-ps b3 not being attached to the inain or back portion b2 are easily raised and the flaps separated therefrom, so that the strips 0 can easily and quickly be inserted in place without wetting the collar.
The strip or strips c form stays .which may be replaced by new ones whenever desired or necessary by reason of the saine being broken or otherwise injured in use, and the fabric strips Z22 may be formed from any suitable material as inay also the collar ai.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is';-
A coll'arsupp'ort or sustainer consisting of a fabric v'strip t-he end portions of which are folded over on one side of the body portion thereof to form iiaps 0f predetermined length, said flaps being stitched centrally and longitudinally to the body portion of said strip and the side edges thereof being left free, and a flexible stay or retaining strip of approximately the saine length as the body portion of the fabric strip after the folding of the end portions thereof, said flexible and sustaining strip being provided in its end portions .with central and longitudinal slots which open outwardly through the ends thereof to receive the line of stitches and permit. the side portions to lie on opposite sides of the saine between the fold and the body portions.
In testimony that I claiin the foregoing as my invention I have signed iny naine in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 26th day of October, 1910.
