Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 30, 1910. Serial No. 594,895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES E. ROBERTSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fouke, in the county of Miller and State of Arkansas have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to lamp burners and particularly to one designed for use in connection with a specific chimney, the object of the invention being to provide a burner and a chimney having cooperating parts which operate to hold the chimney in its applied position to the burner and which will obviate the necessity of the operator holding the chimney when carrying the lamp.

In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved burner, the locking element thereon being removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the locking element. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the chimney. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the burner and through the locking element.

The burner A may be of any approved well known construction which may be found most desirable for the purpose intended, the present burner being provided at its bottom with a base flange 1 which extends preferably entirely around the burner, which is apertured at suitable points, as shown at 2, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A locking element 3 is revolubly mounted on the burner, and as shown, it comprises a ring-like member of angle iron construction in cross section, the said element being formed to-provide a top flange 4 which overlaps a portion of the flangel of the burner. From the top flange 4: depends a side flange 5 which extends downwardly from the side of the flange 1. The flange 5 is formed to provide integral fasteners 6. These fasteners extend inwardly toward the burner beneath the flange 1 thereof and they are movable across the apertures 2.

The element 8 is formed to provide one or more radial lugs or manipulating members 7 by means of which the element 3 may be rotated manually.

The chimney 8 may be of any ornamental configuration with the exception of the base or bottom portion 9. This base or bottom portion is formed with depending hook-like members 10 which may be inserted through the apertures 2 in the base flange 1 of the burner. The said hook-like members 10 have their nose portions 11 suitably spaced from the lower edge of the chimney so as to form spaces 12 into which the lockingmember 6 of the retaining device may be moved. The upper surfaces of the nose portions 11 of the hook members are beveled downwardly and outwardly, as at 13. The chimney may be engaged with the burner and when the hook members are operatively associated with the base flange 1 to depend therefrom and to extend through the apertures 2, the locking element 3 may be rotated manually to cause the members 6 thereon to bear frictionally against the beveled upper surfaces 13 of the members 10. This causes the lower edge portion of the chimney to be moved into effective gripping engagement with the base flange 1 of the burner. From this construction most efficient means are employed for holding the chimney to the burner, and in practice, the means described fully obviate the necessity of holding the chimney with the hand.

I claim:

1. A burner for lamps having an apertured base portion, a chimney having hook members extending through the apertures in the base portion of the burner, and a locking element movably mounted on the base portion of the burner and having detachable locking engagement with the hook members of the chimney.
