MAM 1F B. MORGAN. v
Candle-Guards.
Patented'july 22,1873.
AM PHD TO'L/THOSRAFHIC 00 N. Wesson/15:5 Pnacss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BENJAMIN MORG or sAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT m CANDLE-GUARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,066, dated July 22, 1873; application filed February 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, BENJAMIN MORGAN, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Gandle-Guard 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
My invention consists of a disk with a central opening of sufficient size to admit a candle. The disk is surrounded by a scalloped rim, and the whole is divided equilaterally, and connectcd by a hinge and a flat spring. Thin plates are attached to the bottom part of one side of the disk, so that when they are in contact a tight-fitting joint is had, and prevents the hot tallow from passing through upon the candlestick below, upon which this candleguard is intended to rest; the object being to prevent thehot tallow from dropping into the socket of the candlestick below around the candle and becoming cooled, in which case it would become difficult to raise up the candle,
from the socket; also, to prevent the candle from becoming so low in the socket as to heat it and melt the remaining portion of the candle before a perfect combustion is had.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my candle-guard closed. Fig. 2 is a plan showing the guard open.
A A represent the equilateral portions of the disk, surrounded by the scalloped rimB, which is divided the same as the disk. The two parts are held in place by a hinge, O. A flat spring, D, is attached to each half of the pressure is removed from the handles.
disk, so that when pressure is applied by the fingers to the handles E, the disk will open sufficiently far to admit of a candle being grasped in the central opening F, when the Thin flat plates G G are attached to the bottom of the part A, so that when the part A shuts against A a tight joint is formed, and no hot tallow will pass through in case the candle drips, but will be congealed or cooled on the upper surface of the disk, to be removed as occasion requires.
It is evident that my invention would, of itself, form a very good candlestick by grasping the candle very near its lower end 5 but it is intended principally to be used in conjunction with a candlestick resting on the rim of its socket, the candle to be drawn up from time to time until it is consumed. It might also be employed as a snufl'er, in case of need.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- 1 A candle-guard consisting of the parts A A and hinge O, operated by the spring D and handle E, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the parts A A, hinge 0, spring D, and handle E, the thin plate or flange G G, as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
BENJAMIN MORGAN.
