Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1919.
Application filed February 10, 1919. Serial No. 276,052.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES It. SHAWLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntingdon, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pan-Lids, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention has for its object to provide an inexpensive and compact lid for pans and cooking utensils consisting of a series of separable sections which may be removed from. or applied to a center body section as necessity requires to adapt the lid to pans of varying sizes.
Another object is the provision of conveniently releasable means maintaining the lid sections in assembled relation which may be effectively utilized as handles for handling the sections subsequent to their separation.
With these and other objects in View as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of elements which will be more-fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings:
Figure l represents a plan view of the improved lid, and
Fig. 2 represents a transverse sectlonal view therethrough showing the lid applied to a pan the latter being partially broken away.
Referring to the drawings :in detail, wherein similar reference numerals desig nate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates the center or body section which is of circular form and preferably of such diameter as to ft comparatively small pans and in order to adapt 'the lid to pans of larger sizes, a series of annular detachable sections 6 and 7 are removably a plied thereto. A diametrically disposed liandle 8 is attached to the center section 5 and the edge thereof is turned or crimped to provide a depending flange 9 which when the center section is used separately is adapted to overlie the top edge of a relatively small pan or other cooking utensil. Each of the outer sections 6 and 7 is nearly identical in general construction except that the section 7 is of greater diameter than the section 6 and although only'two outer or annular sections are here shown as applied and associated with the center section` it is evident that as many section may be employed as necessary to obtain a lid of the desired size.
The inner edge of each of the annular seetions 6 and 7 is formed with a circular groove 10 forming a seat for the depending flange 9 of the center section or for the depending flange ll formed at the outer edge of the respective annular sections whereby the sections are readily centered and retained in proper relative assembled relation.
The intermediate annular section 6 is provided with flat leaf-like springs 12 pivotally secured at 13 adjacent the groove 10 and of such length as to overlie the center section 5 and secure the center and intermediate sections together. The free terminals'of the springs are turned back to provide handles 14 whereby the spring retaining members may be conveniently turned upon their pivots 13 and, incidentally, may be utilized to handle the intermediate section independent of the center section 5.
The outer annular section 7 is provided with a pair of spring retaining members l5 which are identical in construction to the retaining members 12 and are pivotally secured in position by pins 16 and are adapted to overlie the intermediate section 6 to secure the sections in proper relative positions.'
What I claim is:
A pan lid including a circular center section. intermediate and outer sections, depending flanges carried by the outer edges of the several sections, the intermediate and outer sections having grooved inner edges assembled relation, said retaining membersV having angular directed terminals for facilitating adjustment of the latter and oonstitut JAMES R.
