Be'it known that I, FRANKLIN G. HIRsT, a citizen of the United States, residing-in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newand useful Automatic Compression Stop and Waste Cock or Valve, of which the following is a specification.
Iy invention relates to a compression and waste cook or valve, in which provision is made for closing and opening the meansfor the escape of the waste waterremaining in the cock and its connecting pipe or conduit, and consists of a supplemental valveto control the exhaust passage and adapted to seat Within the casing and on the seat aroundthe exhaust passage upon a flange, which seat and flange are inthe same plane'to form a continuous bearing surface for the supplemental valve. 7
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be'hereinafter fully set forth. e
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable re sults, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that'my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein sh'own'and described.

Tdesignates a valve which'is adapted to control the port 5 and which is insuitable stem 8, in order that independent rotary movement between these parts is permitted. As here shown, I have provided a neck 9 upon the valve 7, which is engaged by a suitably shaped rib 10 on the stem 8, whereby it will be understood that the said-valve will be raised and lowered with the stem, but that when the valve 7 is in engagement with the seat 6,.the stem 8 maybe independently rotated without imparting rotary movement to the valve, whereby injury to the valve will be prevented. e s,
Projecting at a suitable pointwithin the casing 1 above the valve seat 6 is. an imperforate flange 11 and at suitable points within the casing 1 are the bosses 12, the upperface of each of 'whichis situated in the same plane with the upper face of the flange 11 to form an even and continuous bearing surface therewith around the in terior'of the "casing'and each'of said bosses isflprovided with a passage '13, the inner ends of which communicate with the interi'or of the casing above-the flange and the outer ends of which open exterior of the casing 1, it being understood that'the upper face of such boss serves as a seat around the passage therein. In a device of the character stated, a casing, a valve proper for controlling the passage through the casing, a seat for said valve, a stem suitably carry'ng said valve, a flange in said casing above said valve seat, a boss in said casing having a passage therethrough to the exterior of the casing, the upper face of said boss forming a seat around said passage situated in the same plane With the upper face of the flange to form a continuous bearing surface therewith, recesses in saidiflange on opposite sides of said boss, a supplemental valve in threaded engagement with the stem and having a shoulder adapted to seat upon said flange and passage-seat, to control said passage, ribs on said supplemental valve movable in said recesses and With their ends spaced from the shoulder thereof, a packing for said shoulder With a portion thereof seated in the space between the ends of the rib and the shoulder to insuremovement thereof With said supplemental valve, and a resilient device bearing on said supplemental valve to normally press and hold the same upon said flange. v
3. In a device of the character stated, a
casing, a valve passage through the casing, a seat for said valve, a stem suitably mounted, a connection between said valve and the stem for permitting an independent rotary movement therebetween, an 'imperforate' flange Within said casing above said valve seat, a boss in said casing having to the exterior of the casing, the upper face of said boss forming a seat around said passage situated in the same plane With the upper face of the flange to form a continuous bearing surface therewith, recesses in said flange on opposite sides of said boss, a supplemental valve in threaded engages ment With the stem and having a shoulder adapted to seat upon said flange and pasproper for controlling the a passage therethrough sage-seat, to control said passage, ribs on said supplemental valve movable in said recesses and With their ends spaced from the shoulder thereof, a packing for said shoulder engaged by said ribs to insure movement thereof With said supplemental,
valve to remove the packing from the seat around the passage, and a resilient device bearing on said supplemental valve to normally press and hold the same upon the flange.
