STRAINER FOR SINK-OUTLETS.

Application led May 9, 1910. Serial No. 560,254.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY A. PETERS, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Strainer for Sink-0utlets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a straining means for the drain outlet of a kitchen sink and is designed to enable the water to be freely run off from the sink after use without fear that the straining apertures will become closed with the refuse matter.

In the usual sink drain the area of the straining perforations is so small that they are very readily stopped with the refuse and as `a consequence supplementary strainers are frequently used to avoid the necessity of having to clear the strainer with the hand.

My object has, therefore, been to provide a removable straining receptacle of suicient capacity to contain any ordinary Vamount of solid refuse and having an ample straining area. I further furnish this reeep tacle with a rigid handle by which it may, at any time, be lifted from the sink for the purpose of emptying it and furnish a supplementary strainer at the bottom, of the enlargement within which the straining receptacle is set to prevent any solid matter passing into the drain pipe when the straining receptacle is removed.

The whole device is designed to be applicable to an existing sink with 4the necessity for only slight alterations in the drain pipe connection thereto.

The invention is particularly described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:

Figure l is a vertical section through the end of a sink adjacent to the draining outlet showing the application of my improved st-rainer thereto, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the drain outlet of the sink with the straining receptacle removed. Fig. 3, is a detail sectional view hereinafter referred to.

In these drawings 2 represents the body of the'sink, 4 being the depression adjacent to the drain outlet in which depression the sink strainer is usually secured, to the under side of which connect-ion is made to the outlet pipe or sink trap.

Secured, preferably to the under side of the depression 4:, or in the case of a cast iron sink, made integral with it, is an elongated Specification of Letters Patent.

enlargement 5 the lower end of which is rcduced, as at 7 for the connection to it of the drain pipe 8. Vithin this enlargement 5 is a straining receptacle 6 flanged as at l0 to seat within the depression 4 of the sink and this flange or its seat may be provided with rubber to insure a tight joint as shown in Fig. 3. The sides of the receptacle 6 are freely perforated but the bottom is preferably free from such perforations so as to collect earth or sand which might otherwise settle in the trap of the sink. Secured to the flange 10 of this receptacle Gis a handle ll which should be of thin light material tinted to impart the necessary rigidity and is bent to conform approximately to the adjacent end of thesink above the level of which it is shaped to form a convenient handle. The ordinary sink plug l2 is seated in the upper end of this receptacle and connected by a chain in the usual manner.

Seated on a shoulder at the lower end of the enlargement 5 adjacent to its contraction 7 is a removable disk strainer 9 the object of which is to prevent any solid material passing into the drain pipe when the straining receptacle 6 is withdrawn for emptying.

A distinctive feature of the invention is that it is designed not only to provide an ample straining area but the same forms a receptacle for the collection of the solid material, from the sink water drain, and being removable and provided with a handle above the level of the sink can at any time be removed to empty the receptacle without putting the hand into the refuse matter which is always unpleasant. The provision of the supplementary strainer plate beneath the receptacle enables the receptacle to be withdrawn without fear that solid matter will pass into the drain pipe.

A convenient' a'nd particularly elfic'ient straining means is thus provided'which can be readily attached to an existing sink by the removal of the existing strainer plate and the attachment of the drain pipe to the lower end of the provided enlargement.

Having now particularly described my invention and the manner of its application, I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:

l. In combination with a sink having a depressed portion provided with a drainage aperture, a tubular casing having a flange at one end secured beneath the sink over said aperture7 a strainer having a flanged end to rest on said sink within said depressed portion and project into said casing, said casing having a seat at its lower end, a strainer plate removably held in said seat, a rigid handle secured to said strainer flange and projected upwardly beyond the upper edge of the sink, said handle being bent to conform closely to the outline of said sink and lie in close proximity thereto, and a removable cover for said {langed strainer.

2. The combination with the drain aperture of a kitchen sink, of a chamber downwardly projecting therefrom to' the lower end ot' which chamber the sink drain pipe is connected, a removable strainer plate in the bottom of the chamber, a straining receptacle ilanged to restupon the upper edge of the/ drain aperture of the sink and to project downward within the chamber said receptacle having no straining apertures in or adjacent to the bottom and a handle secured to itand projecting to the upper level of the sink, said handle'being bent to conform to the outline of said sink and lie in close proximity thereto. l
