Description

'UNITED STATES OFFICE.
CLYDE A. PIERCE, 01 SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SINK-STRAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13,1912.
Application filed January 30 1911. Serial No. 605,489.
I has for its object the retention of garbage or other refuse in order to prevent the stoppage or choking of the drain pipe attached there to and to retain the refuse or garbage in a convenient receptacle that can be conveniently withdrawn from the drain pipe. I
accomplish this by the device shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a sink with its drain pipe showing my device in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the strainer.
The numeral 1 is used to designate a sink of the ordinary type having a drain 2 terminating in the usual pipe 3. An inner bucket 4 is provided at its top with an annular flange 5 whose diameter is greater than that 2.5 of the drain 2 so that the bucket 41- may be deposited within the said drain 2 in such a manner that the top of the flange 5 will be flush with the bottom of the sink 1. The body of the bucket A is provided with holes 6. A flanged ring 7 is adapted to seat within the top of the bucket 4 in the same manner that the said bucket is received within the drain Qand has a cylindrical body 8 of comparatively fine screen, of such diameter that a space is left between the said screen and the bucket 4:, depending therefrom. A
solid bottom 9 of any suitable material is socured to the screen 8. A bar or handle 10 is integral with the ring 7 to provide a means for removing the screen 8 from within the bucket 4:- A handle 11 is secured to the top of the bucket 4: so as to lie when not in use within a recess in the flanged portion of the bucket.
I am aware that in the present state of the art strainers have been provided that are removable, but my invention lies in the fact that there are no holes in the bottom of the strainer 8. The refuse that is carried into the strainer is caught by the solid bottom and the water is free to run over the top of the refuse so collected and out through the holes 6 in the bucket 4. Were holes provided in the bottom 9 a certain amount of water is certain to seep through and carry some of the refuse with it into the drain.
When the strainer 8 becomes full of refuse itis removed by means of the bar 10. This leaves the bucket 4. still in position to prevent the refuse from going into the drain pipe 2. Should it be desired to remove the bucke 1- from its place for cleansing or any othc purpose the handlell is raised from the recess when the said bucket can be easily removed, making the drain 2 accessible for cleaning or removing anything that may have become lodged therein.
I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction shown herein but rather to avail myself of any modification that may fall properly within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is In a sink strainer, the combination of a perforated bucket having an annular flange CLYDE A. PIERCE. lVitnesses A. O. CoLToN,
