Description
G. PARSONS.
WRENCH. APPLIUATION FILED r1211. 1, 1911.
Patented Apr. 11, 1911.
CLYDE PARSONS, 0F HAMMONDSVILLE, OHIO.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE PARSONS, a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Hammondsville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the objects of my invention are to provide a. pipe wrench consisting of comparatively few parts easily assembled, quickly adjusted, free from injury by ordinary use, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
Briefly described, the wrench comprises a handle or lever having a serrated grip"- pingjaw, and slidably mounted in said lever or handle adjacent to said jaw is the j toothed shank of a curved gripping aw, the toothed shank is frictionally held in e11- gagement with the handle or lever by a holdfast device arranged within said handle or lever.
The invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the pipe wrench, Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of the wrench.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a lever or handle having the upper end thereof slightly enlarged, as at 2 and one face thereof curved, as at 3 and provided with transverse teeth or serrations 4. The enlarged end 2 of the handle or lever is provided with an angularly disposed slot 5, and the lower wall 6 of said slot at the outer side of the enlargement 2 is provided with a transverse tooth 7, said tooth connecting projecting flanges or ribs 8 carried by the rear side of the enlargement 2.
Movably mounted within the slot 5 is the shank 9 of a curved gripping jaw 10 adapted to cooperate with the upper end of the handle or lever 1 in gripping a pipe 11. The jaw 10 corresponds in width to the upper end of the handle or shank 1 and the shank 9 is of a less width than the jaw 10 whereby it will easily slide within the slot Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 1, 1911.
Patent-ed Apr. 11, 1911.
Serial No. 605,967.
5. The lower edge of the shank 9 is provided with transverse teeth or serrations 12 adapted to be engaged by the transverse tooth 7 of the handle or lever 1. The shank 9 is normally held in engagement with the transverse tooth 7 by a hold-fast device located within the slot 5 and comprising a flat spring 13 having one end thereof fixed to the upper wall of the slot 5 by a screw 14 or other fastening means and the free end thereof engaging the upper side or surface of the shank 9. The oppositely disposed flanges or ribs 8 are adapted to protect the free end of the spring 13, besides preventing a wabbling sidewise movement of the shank 9 within the slot 5.
The wrench in its entirety is made of strong and durable metal and can be made of various sizes. lVith the handle or lever 1 of considerable length considerable leverage can be obtained for rotating the pipe 11 or an object having cylindrical or curved surfaces.
lVhat I claim is A pipe wrench comprising a handle having the upper end thereof enlarged and provided with curved surfaces having transverse teeth or serrations, said handle having the enlarged end thereof provided with an angularly disposed slot, a tooth carried by the lower wall of said slot, oppositely disposed flanges carried by the rear side of said handle at the sides of said slot at the ends of said tooth, a shank slidably mounted in the slot of said handle and having the lower edge thereof serrated or toothed to engage the tooth of said handle, a curved gripping jaw carried by said shank and adapted to cooperate with the curved serrated surface at the upper end of said handle, and a flat spring connected to the upper wall of said slot and adapted to normally hold said shank within said slot, the end of said spring being protected by said flanges, substantially as, and for the purpose herein described.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CLYDE PARSONS.
