WITNESSES: INVENTOR h 7 Samuel W. Hassler;
BY @HMW A NEY 7n: NORRIS PETERS cc), WASHIHCION 1:.c.
SAMUEL W. HASSLER, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF T0 GOODLING AND SMYSER, OF Y ORK, PENNSYLVANIA, A FIRM.
BENCH-SHEARS.
Patent-ed Apr. 11, 1911. Serial No. 518,788.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. HASSLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bench-Shears, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to bench shears, for cutting sheet metal, etc., and more particularly to that class which are intended to be detachably mounted upon a bench or other suitable support.
The objects of the invention are to pr vide a simple, powerful and eificient device of this class, wherein the cutting jaws may be operated by either a forward or a back ward stroke of the hand-lever, thus produc ing a quick acting shear, combined with great ease of operation.
IVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in a certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in the follo' ing specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views; but it is fully understood that while I have herewith described my invention as shown, that I do not confine myself to the exact design as shown, as slight changes may be made in the construction and combination of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
My invention consists in a lever shears having the lower or fixed blade detachably mounted upon a bench, the upper or movable blade pivoted to the fixed blade and pro vided with a roller-race in the rear portion thereof; while to the rear portionof the fixed blade is pivoted the end of the handlever, which, at a suitable point in the body thereof, is provided with a stud carrying a roller which is in engagement with the roller-race in the movable blade, thus producing the proper leverage to operate the blades or jaws when the hand-lever is moved forward or backward. I
In the drawings :Figure 1, is a side elevation of my device, showing the hand-lever in the rearward position. Fig. 2, is a side elevation, showing the hand-lever in the forward position. Fig. 3, is a top plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is a detail sectional view of the roller and roller-race.
Referring to the drawings, the fixed blade 1, is provided with the cutting edge 2, and at its rear end or heel, with the depending lug 3, which fits into an orifice in the bench 4; the lower edge of the body of the blade resting upon the bench.
The movable blade 5, is provided with a cutting edge 6,and is pivoted to the fixed blade by the pivot 7 while its rear or body portion is provided with the roller-race 8, in the inner side thereof.
At a suitable point on the body of the fixed blade is provided an ear or bracket 9, to which is pivoted the end of a hand-lever 10, by the bolt 11. Said hand-lever 10, being provided at a suitable distance from its pivot point with a stud 12, which carries a roller 13, which is engaged by and rolls within the race 8, in such a manner that when the hand-lever is moved forward the blades will be brought into cut-ting contact and also when the hand-lever is forced rearwardly, the blades will again be brought into cutting contact, the jaws being open when the hand-lever is in a vertical position.
Having thus described my invention what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a shearing device of the class described, the combination with a fixed jaw provided with means for detachably securing to a bench, and a movable jaw pivoted thereto and formed with a rearwardly projecting portion formed with a straight rollerrace in the body thereof, of a hand-lever having one of its ends pivoted upon said fixed jaw, and a roller-stud secured to said hand-lever adj acent to the pivot point thereof and engaging said roller-race for the purpose of opening and-closing said jaws twice during a swing of 180 of said hand-lever.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL W; HASSLER.
