FREDERICK CHAPMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
STOP-COCK BOX, HYDRANT, AND STREET-WASHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1911.
Application filed May 23, 1910. Serial No. 562,867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop-Cock Boxes, Hydrants, and Street-WVashers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a new and useful construction of stop cock box hydrant and street washer, the object being to provide a simple and eflicient device which can be inexpensively made and easily put together and one which can be used for either an ordinary stop cock box or a hydrant or a street washer as preferred and in fact can be used for all three if so desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which shall be adjustable so as to accommodate various depths of pipe, that is so as to be capable of use in connection with pipes located at dif- Mferent depths below the pavement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device composed of sections so made as to avoid the necessity of having a core, as each section will in reality provide its own core.
With these and certain other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a partof this specification :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box complete, the sections being slightly separated and locked in that position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same, and, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a lower section A having the expanded base portion A, and this section A tubular in form is composed of two sections as most clearly shown and the expanded base being integral therewith is also formed of two sections and at the juncture of the tubular portion and base, I cast each section with lugs A through which the bolts B are adapted to pass for the purpose of connecting two sections together in order to provide the tubular lower section A and expanded portion A, said base portion having openings A for the purpose of admitting the supply pipes. Telescoping upon this lower section A is the upper section C, also composed of two sections provided with mating lugs C through which bolts B are adapted to be passed for the purpose of fastening these sections together and at the upper end this portion is expanded to provide the box C for the purpose of accommodating the pipe terminals a key and other parts usually contained therein. This portion C in addition to the lugs C is also provided with mating lugs C between which the hinge lug D of the cover D is adapted to be secured and this cover D has an opening adjacent its distal end through which a screw E is adapted to be passed for the purpose of securing the cover or lid, said screw entering a lug E formed integral with one side of the box portion C It will be understood that the upper section O can be adjusted up or down upon the lower section A so as to make the device as a whole any desired length in order to reach from the pipe to the surface of the street and after the sections have been so adjusted they are securely fastened by means of a set screw F passing through the upper section and binding upon the lower section as most clearly shown.
The upper and lower tubular sections together with parts connected therewith are each made in half sections as shown and in being so made they practically form their own core and therefore avoid the necessity of having a core made for them and consequently I am able to produce this device at a very low price.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A device of the kind described, comprising an upper section having an expanded top, screw for securing said sections in any desaid top having an lnterior lug provlded SlI'GCl ad ustment, each sectlon conslsting of Wlth a threaded aperture, a cover hlnged to two longltudlnal halves bolted to ether.
b said top, a screw carried by said cover and FREDERICK CHAPMAN. adapted to engage the threaded lug, a lower Witnesses: I section having an'expanded base, said upper FREDK. BALZ, and lower sections telescopin and a se* FREDERICK H. HoNooKs.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, I). C.
