Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK CHAPMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
STREET-WASH ER.
SPECIPICATION`fo'ming part of Letters Patent No. 341,&05, dated May 4, 1886.
Application filed February 19. 1886. Serial No.192,549. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK CHAPMAN, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Street-Washer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the water-pipe con nections and appliances commonly known as street-washers; and my invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the acoompanying drawngs, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
'Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan'view of the same, the top of the main box and the cap being removed; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the cap.
A represents the main box of the street- Washer, to be set in the ground or pavement immediately over the water-main or servicepipe B, and closed by a removable plate or cover, C. The box A and pipe B are connected by a pipe, D, to the upper end of which a hose or hydrant maybe attached. .The connection of the pipes B D is fitted with avalve, E, which is covered by the box F. The upper main box, A, is formed with a depression, G, in its bottom, and surrounding the depression G is the fiange or collar H. In an opening, J, in the depression Gr is fitted the upper end of the tube or shell K, which leads to the top of the box F, and in the tube or shell K is placed the rod L, which connects with the valve E,
and is made square at its upper end to' receive a key for turning it for opening and closing the valve. A stop plate or yoke, M, is placed upon the rod L, formed with the opposite projections a a, which act between and upon the opposite sides of the fixed studs b b to limit the rotary movement of the rod L. The yoke M and studs b are protected by the abovementioned fiange or collar H,which surrounds and rises above them, as shown in Fig. 1, and
covering the flange or collar H and the parts contained therein is the cap N. Thisis formed With the central aperture, (l, to expose the upper end of the rod L, and is held in place by the pins c c, which pass through small holes made in the cars d' d', formed at the edge of the cap N, so that the cap is held securely in place and prevents dirt from entering the collar H, depression G, and pipe K, and interfering with the free movement of the rod L and stop plate or yoke M.
Constructed in the manner described, the street-Washer is not only wholly protected from becoming clogged by the entrance of dirt to the movable parts thereof, but is practical and cheap to manufacture.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The box A, formed with the npwardlyprojecting fiange H, surrounding the opening in which the shell K is fitted, in combination with the cap N, Secured to the bottom of the box A, over the fiange H, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The box A, formed with the depression G, aperture J, collar or flange H. and studs b, in combination with the cap N, the rod L, shell K, and yoke M, placed upon the rod L, substantially as and for the purposes set fortl.
