, claro tho followin to be a full, clear, and 6351-- act dcscription ol the sonic, rci croncc being had to tho accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention rclatcs to ir provcmcnts in appliances or fixtures for facilitating manipulation of stop co ch as usually employed in the house 11mins or betwcoli tho street mains and houses The objects of the invention are to provide cxcccdingly simple and incxpcnsivo but highly eliici cnt devices capable of use in practically a l situations and a zlaptcd f or use with stop (1 located at widely different depths.
A further obicct to provide a structurc which shall be inconspicuous in tho pave-Ll surface of tho street not liable to be injured 1' thrown out of position oithcr by frost or b rough or heaw tra filo.
Tlic inycntion consists in curtain novel details of construction and coinbimitions and arrangements of parts all as will be now doscribcd and pointcd out particularly in tho appcudcd claims. A
llclcrring to ti accompaiiying drnwings Figure: l is a vertical section, with parts n clcvation, of a structure oirbodying tho pusa dc-lail ccl'um lane at ht an-- p 02's; icc 4 vivw o from tho other. key and guard collar out invcntiojn. 3

settle to of thobody.
hc T-handlc c of the stop cock is provided with a con ling or key socket D loosely connected wit the 'T-handlc of the stop cock to permit the correct operation of the parts should the box and stop cock be set outof alincment or work out of alinemcnt at any time. Tho s ccilic connection shown is somewhat in t 1% nature of a universal coupling and is made by forming a slot or recess d in thccoupling for the race tion of the T- head. underlying one cud of tho head so as todlold tho coupling against upward movement and a liniitcd extent independently One end of tho slot as a brid e d a cross pin d passes under the opposite side of the T-aoad to hold the parts against com-- plcto separation unless the cross pin be intentionally withdrawn. At its 11 per end, the con ling is formed to enter t a lower end of t 9 body of the box with some degree of freedom, and centrally it is provided with a. rectangular or other irregular shaped socketor reccss E for the reception of the correspondingly formed end of a key F. Instead of bein closed at the bottom, the socket or recess merges into openin s 'E at the sidcs cf the couplin to provi'de ior the escape oi sand or dirtsncli as is liable to drop into tho same and to facilitate the forciblecjeotion of the dirt by tho koy the cross sectional area of tho side openings is. preferably grcatcr than that of tho socket and in addltion the bottom of tho sockct and side openings is inclined to pcrxnit the dirt to passthrough without lod ing.
The upper part or the couplin whereit cutors the body part A is prcfcrab y reduced in cxlcrnal diamctor for a considerable dis lnn-i'i' and to prcvcnt complete separation of lli s g cock and box or to prevent the stop ('ocl 'om settling too low, sot screws 1) are pussml ilu-ougli the wall of the body to serve limiting stops against which the enlarged luad or cxl'rcnlity of the coupling will come to rest if the stop cock should tend to drop away.
'lho upper part of the box is preferably l'ox'mcd by a section G of ordinary g s or wator pipo tcloscopod into the body or lower section and preferably passing through a packing box (to be presently described) on the upper end of the lower section. Complctc witlulrawal or separation of the upper from tho lowcr scction may be provcnted by l'or'b bendin' small arts there-of outward The top flange or surface plate 1 is screw threaded on the upper end 0 the upper sectlon. Centrally it is provided with brass hushed threaded aper ure for the passage of the key, said aperture being adapted to be closed by an iron plug K the head of which lies in a recess i the plate. Said recess is formed-with lateraldr inage 'or cleaning channel.or groove M to prevent a'iCCllillUltw tion-oi water or dirt, or to facili ate cleaning around'the plug preliminary to removing the latter for the insertion oi the key.
' For use in soft sandy or muddy earth, or where an extended surface plate is desired for any reason, a supplemental surface plate N is provided, said supplemental piste being in the form of an annulus adapted to fit under the flange or plate on the upper section and having recesses for the ribs n on the under side of the latter.
To limit the downward movement of the upper section and to prevent the upper sectlondropping low enough to injure the stop cook or coupling a collar or flange 0 is formed in the body-A just above the couplin and in position to engage the lower end of the upper section withoutinterfering with the insertion of the key for turning the cock.
'At the upper end of the body section a packing box 18 provided of such construction as-to avoid the use of cores in casting the body section. To accomplish this end, as Well as to provide a means whereby the two sections may be held in adjusted position with sufficient firmness for setting etc., the upper end of the body A is formed with external ears 7t. ",Seati sf on the said upper end is a box H for the flexible or elastic packing 'H and above the box is the gland H having ears 71, Bolts it connect the ears h an d 7L2 and serve to hold the parts in place and draw the land down on the packing with greater or ess pressure so as to bind the upper section with a i'riction grip. The box H is preferably centered by small projections k 5 on its under face adapted to enter the upper end of the body A.
It will be seen that not only is the struc' ture one well calculated to Withstand the action of the surrounding soil under the influence of the elements or changes in tom: perature but the parts may be mat e of small section thus the body may be 1;; inches in diameter and pipe may be used for the top section in ordinary house connections. The provision of a socket coupling permits the use of a long key of small diameter and by locating the socket deep in the earth, the liability of ineddlesome interference is reduced to the minimum. while the operation of the cock by authorized persons provided with a proper key is facilitated.
The use oi an iron or steel plug in a brass hushed aperture not only insures the easy opening the box but the plug itself is strong and being of small value is not liable to be stolen as practice has ionstrated' to be the case where brass plugs are used.
To avoid injury to the br s s in the aperture, the hey s loose fiangef collar P the aperture W ng duringthe in be read ly uruier stood and said l rectangular iorin throng, at one end for manipuhtrug the headed cocks, iv-h r. boxes Ell the present inven n are not used.
radial r us on tli'= under side of the top plate hold no latter Inst turning and in on vc to mate 'ally strengthen the pie v The u per end oi the coupling or key socket D is of gn'eaterexternal diameter than the internal diameter of the u per section G. The socket can, therefore, 1e made large enough to accommodate a key equal in Width to the intern al diameter of the upper section G.
Having thu described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors Patent. is
l. A. box. iorstreet sto cock connections embodying lower section having a stop cock housing at its lower end and a packing box at the upper end, a tubular upper section having a surlace plate screw threaded on its upper end and telescoping into the lower section through the packing box, a coupling adapted for loose connection with the stop cook, the lower end of said coupling project ing into the stop cock housing and its upper end having a greater external diameter than the internal diameter of the upper section projecting loose. intothe lower section, and means whereb aid cou ling is loosely confined in and (led by t is lower section below the lower end of the upper section the construction being such that the coupling may be positioned. on the. stop cock prior to the placing of the box in position.
A box for street stop cocks embodying sections tch coped. together, a surface plate secured. e 1e top of the upper section and having 1 recess, a central aperture and lateral. rage chsnucl from the recess closing the aperture having a i. in the recu 1011 the plug is in ially described.
. box for street stop cocks embodying telescope sections, a surfs plate on the top of the upper section and having radial ribs 'lifi u central. aperture, a closure for said aperture and a removable annular extension plate havin its c 'itrul opening formed to rec oi the topplatc; substantially sections telescoped together, a stop cock at the lower end having a loosely connected coupling adapted to be positioned thereon before. the box is placed in position over the coupling, said coupling having a reduced intermediate portion and set screws in the lower section of the box loosely engaging in the reduced portion of the coupling, whereby they may be positioned after the box and coupling are positioned to prevent the entire separation of the box and stop cock.
5. A box for street stop cocks embodying tr-descopic sections each formed ol snlall uniform diameter, and the upper section litting within the lower section a stop cock coupling below the end of the upper section and liaving a socke ted upper end litting in and guided by the lower end of the lower section, and a loose connection between the said coupling and stop cock whereby the coupling may as described.
