MARIUS RAIVIASSOT, 0F LYON, FRANCE.
GAS WATER-HEATER.
Application led November 17, 1908.
To all' whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAmUs RAMAssoT, citizen of France, residing at Lyon, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas Flater-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gas water heaters, and the object of the invention is to provide a heater formed of similar units capable of being coupled together in varying numbers according to the extent of the heating surface required.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings showing illustrative embodiments of several modifications of the invention and in which the same reference characters refer to similar parts in the several iigures, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the apparatus composed of three units. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of one of the units. Figs. 3 to 7, inclusive, are sectional views taken respectively on the lines rtl- A, B-B, C-C, D-D, and E-E of Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a view in side elevation of one of the units. Fig. 9 is a section taken on the line F-F of Fig. S.
Referring to the apparatus shown in the figures, each unit includes the heating tube and also parts of the associated jackets and pipes, which construction permits a suitable number of units to be connected to one another, whereby to form a heater having a given heating surface. Each unit comprises outer aclets, a, adapted to register with corresponding jackets of the adjacent units and a horseshoesshaped chamber, Z), adapted to contain water, the lower end of each branch thereof being provided with orifices, c, by means of which communication may be established with corresponding chambers of the adjacent units. Positioned centrally of the units is a water chamber, d, communicating at its lower end with the lower end of one of the branches of the chamber b, as by means of an opening, c. At its upper end the chamber CZ is provided with laterally extending connections f by means of which it may be placed in communication with the upper ends of central chambers associated with the adjacent units. Extending through the chamber CZ is a tube, g, the lower end of which registers with a gas burner, i, and the upper end of which communicates by means of suitable passages, It, with the inner gas Specification of Letters Patent.

space between the chamber Z and the chain-- ber b. Passages m extend between the inner gas space and the outer jackets a: adjacent their lower ends.
The desired number of units are coupled together in any suitable manner and the units positioned at the ends of the assembled devices are provided with end plates j. Preferably, the burners z' of the several units are supplied from a single conduit, 7c.
In operation, the heated gases pass upwardly through the tubes g, then through the passages la., after which they pass downwardly between the central chamber CZ and the chamber o. The gases are then passed through the passage m to the outer jackets, from which they escape through an exhaust conduit, Z, which is common to all of the units. rlhe circulation of the water is clearly indicated by the arrows shown in Fig. 2. The heated gases thus travel in the opposite direction from that in which the water travels, and the heat therefrom is utilized in an extremely efficient manner to heat the water. The extreme heat to which the water in the chamber (l is subjected at the point where it leaves the apparatus causes an artificial-Siphon action in the circuit of each unit, and this action, in turn, causes a rapid and positive circulation throughout the heating system.
Having described the invention in connection with the illustrative embodiments thereof to t-he details of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited, what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claim.
A gas water heater comprising a plurality of units connected together, each unit consisting of a water chamber having a central heat-ing tube extending therethrough, a gas burner adjacent the lower end of the tube, said water chamber having an outlet at its upper end, a horseshoe-shaped water chamber surrounding said first-mentioned water chamber and having one of its ends in communication with the lower end thereof, said horseshoe chamber being provided with an inlet at its other end, a casing surrounding the horseshoeshaped chamber, means for causing the products of combustion from the bottom of the tube to pass around the water chambers, the lower ends of the horseshoe-shaped chamber of each unit communicating with the corresponding ends of the horseshoe-shaped Chambers of name to this specification in the presence of the uxts atljacent thereco zltnlbtlne inppelr two subscribing Witnesses. end o the lrst-Inentone o am er o eaol unit communicating with the upper ends of MRIUS RAMASSOT 5 the corresponding chambers of the units ad- Witnesses:
