WATER HEATER.
Application filed June 19, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ARCHER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario. Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in 0 water heaters, particularly of that type which is associated with a water boiler for storing the heated water, and one o f the objects oft-he invention is to provide the maximum heating surface for the device so that by the time the water passes therefrom and into the boiler or to point of consumption it shall have been heated to the required degree. Another object of the invention is to provide a water heater which is comparati-vely simple and inexpensive in its construction, and which comprises few and durable parts whichcan be readily taken apart or assembled, as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my water heater on a small scale, showing the same mounted underneath a water tank and coupled thereto, which tank is shown partly in section, in association with a gas burner. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section through the major portion of the water heater. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cylindrical heating drum, showing certain pipes in section, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal cross-section on the line 4.4, Fig. 3.
In the drawings, like characters of reference refer to the same parts.
A is the water tank having any suitable outlet B.- C is the bottom of the water tank, and opening through this bottom and through the top of the tank is a central flue D. The sides of the water tank are extended below the bottom C to provide a chamber E, in which chamber is located the water heater, and the heating device which may be in the form of a gas burner F. I prefer to pass the cold water to the heater through the intake pipe G located within the central flue D, and it will be seen upon referring to Fig. 2, particularly, that the pipe G is coupled to the distributing head I. Also coupled to this head I are a plurality of conduits J radially disposed, and these conduits are coupled to the conduits K by right-and Serial No. 569,301.
left-hand-threaded couplings L. The conduits K are coupled to the cylindrical heating drum 2 and communicate with passageways 3 extending longitudinally thereof. Formed in the walls of this .drum and extending longitudinally thereof and between the passages-ways 3 are gas passages A which permit the products of combustion to pass through said drum and up each side of the passage-ways 3. The drum 2 is also pro vided with a central passage-way 5 through which extends the intake pipe G, and it will be understood that products of combustion will pass through this passage-way 5. 6 are a plurality of conduits coupled to the upper ends of the passage-ways 3 in the heating drum 2, and these conduits are connected by the couplings 7 to the conduits S which are coupled to the distributing ring 9 which surrounds the drum 2 and is spaced apart therefrom so as to permit free circulation of products of combustion between these parts. By means of the couplings 10 the hot water is delivered from the distributing ring 9 into the water tank A.
11 is an imperforate-plate mounted on the intake pipe G and projecting therebeyond into contact with the conduits'G, and the ob ject of this plate is to divert the ascending products of combustion to cause it to flow radially outwardly from the pipe G and surround the conduits 6 and 8.
The conduits J, K, 6 and S are substantially the same in diameter but are of considerably smaller diameter than the intake pipe G, and the capacity of these various conduits permits the free flow of water through the device and in such manner that the water is readily heated in the smaller pipes as it flows therethrough and in the passage-ways 3 formed in the heating drum 2, and the passage-way 12 formed in the distributing ring 9.
It will be observed that these various small conduits are radially disposed in remay be made without departing from the spirit of this invention.
In order to facilitate assembly, the alternate conduits 8 and 6 are shorter than certain of their associated conduits.
What I claim is:
1. A water heater comprising a cylindrical heating drum provided with a plurality of passage-ways extending longitudinally thereof, and further provided with longitudinal gas passages between said passageways; a distributing head located below said drum; a plurality of conduits leading from said distributing head to the lower ends of said passage-ways formed in said drum; an intake pipe extending through said drum and coupled to said distributing head; a distributing ring surrounding said drum and provided with an outlet, and a plurality of conduits connecting the upper ends of said passage-ways formed in said drum with said distributing ring.
2. A water heater comprising a cylindrical heating drum provided with a plurality of passage-ways extending longitudinally thereof, and further provided with longitudinal gas passages between said passageways; a distributing head located below said drum; a plurality of conduits leading from said distributing head to the lower ends of said passage-ways formed in said drum; an intake pipe extending through said drum and coupled to said distributing head; a distributing ring surrounding said drum and provided with an outlet, and a plural ty of conduits connecting the upper ends of said passage-ways formed in said drum with said distributing. ring, the individual bores of said conduits and their associated passageways being smaller than the bore of said intake pipe.
3. A water heater comprising a cylindrical heating drum provided with a plurality of passageways extending longitudinally thereof, and further provided with longitudinal gas passages between said passageways; a distributing head located below said drum; a plurality of conduits leading from said distributing head to the lower ends of said passage-ways formed in said drum; an intake pipe extending through said drum and coupled to said distributing head; a distributing ring surrounding said drum and provided with an outlet; a plurality of conduits connecting the upper ends of said passage-ways formed in said drum with said distributing ring, and an imperforate plate mounted on said intake pipe and above said heating drum to divert the upward How of hot air. 7 v y 4:. A water heater comprising a cylindrical heating drum provided with a. plurality of passage-ways extending longitudinally thereof and further provided with longitudinal gas passages between said passageways; a distributing head located below said drum; a plurality of two-part conduits leading from said distributing head "to the lower ends of said passage-ways formed in said drum; an intake pipe extending through said drum and coupled to said distributing head; a distributing ring surrounding said drum and provided with an outlet; and a plurality of two-part conduits connecting the upper ends of said passage-ways formed in said drum with said distributing ring.
