Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID GREENE HASKINS, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,748, dated July 3l, 1866.
To all whom/t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID GREENE HAS- KINs, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Method of Heating Water in the Boilers of Locomotive and other Engines for Generating Steam; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, au'd exact description of the same, reference being had to the accom pau ying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l represents a side elevation of the apparatus with part of the outer casin g broken away, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section ofthe same.
My invention has for its object the heat-ing of water in the boilers of engines for the gener;
ation of steam by means of the flame of `gas or of any oil or fluid applied to the outer or exposed surface of the said boilers, either entirely or in part, as may be considered necessary 5 and the invention consists in the application of such ame by means of a series of tubes or pipes so arranged in relation to the boiler as to carry out I'nost effectually the object desired.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the main part of the boiler, supplied with water in the usual manner. Extending longitudinally through the boiler, and firmly secured at each end ofthe same, are shown two tubes, B B, in each ot'which is a series of small gas tubes or pipes, ce a, connected at each end to a circular tube, through which the gas in supplied to the pipes a.
To the under side of the tubesB are att-ached tubes C, of which there may be two or more, extending through the boiler, and open at their lower ends for the admission of fresh air to the tubesB, to assist in the combustionot'the gases in said tubes. To the upper side of the tubes B B are also attached tubes D, two or more,
' extending through the boiler and opening into 'the space'above the boiler for the escape of the consumed gases or products of combustion from the pipes a a.
On the outside of the boiler A, and arranged longitudinally with the same, is a Vseries of pipes, b b, connected at their ends with circular tubes b b', through which gas is supplied to the pipes b.
The pipes a, and b are to be provided with apertures or burners, placedV at intervals throughout their length, for the emission of gas, with which they are to be supplied. The apertures may be single perforations or form a series of longitudinal slots, so as to emit, as nearly as possible, a continuous sheet of Ham e. Surrounding the main boilerA and the outer series of pipes b b is a casing or jacket, E, connected by means of pipes or otherwise to the mainboiler A;
-A series of pipes may also be placed iu the rear of the boiler, and arranged in a spiral or concentric form or horizontally across the same, and provided with apertures or burners similar to the pipes a and b.
Pipes E are made to pass through the outer casing, E, for the escape of the consumed gases orproducts of combustion in the space between the main boiler and outer casing, E.
Gas is to be supplied to the pipes a and b by means of tubes from any convenient reservoir or tank connecting with the tube The pipes a and b are to be placed as near to each other in the separate series as may be found necessary, and as near to the boileras may be requisite to impart the greatest degree of heat from the flame, thedesign being to cause the heat to impinge upon the surface of the entire boiler, or as much of it as may be found necessary to heat the water to the most effective point for the generation of steam required.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is-
l. The combination of a series of perforated pipes with the exterior or heating surfaces of steam-generators, for the purpose of utilizing gases in the generation of steam, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination of the boiler A with the tubes B B and series of pipes ct and b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of the boiler A, the casing E, and interposed series of pipes b, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
D. G. HASKINS.
