Description
ATTORNEY INVENTOR Patented Mar. 23, 1880.
D. HAWKINS. Combined Boiler and Heater.
wlmasses Q @may UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL HAwKINs, OE EAsT OTTO, NEW YORK.
COMBINED BOILER AND HEATERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,823, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed August 4, 1879.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL HAWKINS, of East Otto, in the county of Gattaraugus and State Ot' New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Boiler and Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation ot' a longitudinal vertical section of the boiler and heater combined and covered in, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
This invention has relation to improvements in steam-generators.
The object ofthe invention is, in return-fine boilers, to protect the brick arch upon which said boilers rest from the direct destructive effects of the action of fire, and to utilize the heat that would otherwise pass into the walls of the arch and be wasted to warm the feedwater, thus increasing the steaming qualities of the boiler and accomplishing a great saving in fuel.
The nature of the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A desi gnates an ordinary boiler, having a return-Hue, a, Opening in rear into a boX or uptake, b, and in front int-O the usual smoke-box c, whence the products of combustion pass into the stack.
lUnder the boiler is the fire-chamber B and ash-pit C.
D indicates the heaters, arranged one at each side of the ire-chan1ber,eXtending the entire length of the boiler, and connected therewith by the elbow-pipes d opening into the water-space of the boiler, and with each other at their rear ends by the pipe d. These heaters are of oblong form in cross-section, with arched upper and lower walls, b', and are made of heavy boiler-iron, and are strongly braced inside. They form the sides of the fire-chamber, extending back to the uptake at the rear of the boiler. The pipe-connections d d and feed-pipe e leading into one of the heaters have all steam-tight joints.
As shown in Fig. 1, the heaters may extend the whole length of the boiler, but only eX- tend downward as far as the grate Gr. They form the side walls of the fire-chamber, as shown in Fig. 2, and receive the direct action of the products of combustion. They rest upon a brick base or foundation, which aords them adequate support. The heaters and boiler are completely covered in by a brickwork arch at their top, sides, and ends, as shown at W and W', the front end being provided with the usual metallic front.
In practice, the heaters, the pipe-connections, and lower halt` of the boiler are full of water, and consequently are but little aiected by the tire in chamber B; but the effective heating-surface is increased to the extent of the superficies ofthe inner walls of said heaters. At the same time the heaters protect the brick arch from 'the destructive effects ot' the fire, by which means it is made to last indeflnitely with a few casual repairs, instead of having to be renewed every year.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The return-due boiler A, having the independent oblongheatersD,providedwith arched upper and lower walls, b', said heaters extending the full length of the boiler, forming the sides of the fire-chamber, and connected to the boiler by the elbow-pipes cl opening into the water-space, and with each other at their rear ends by the pipe d', the feed-pipe e, leading into one of the heaters, the sides and ends of said boiler adapted to be closely covered in with a brick arch, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL IIAWKINS.
