STEAM-BOILER AND FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,735, dated October 26, 1880.
Application filed February 25, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J osnrn E. OULVER, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Steam-Boilers and Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to steam generators wherein the heated products of combustion may be commingled wit-h the steam for use with an engine, or for heating purposes, or used separately.
The construction will be explained with reference to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure l is a sectional plan view of aboiler and furnace embodying my invention, on line m w of Fig. 2. a a are the outer walls of the boiler and furnace; b, the bottom, and c the top, which are made of sheet metal.
The top 0 is formed with depending flanges c, and sits loosely upon the side walls, a, and the pressure within the boiler may be regulated by weighting the cover a, as shown in the drawings, but the top of the boiler may be steam-tight.
The space within the walls is divided by a vertical partition, m, near one end, the larger chamber A, formed by this partition, being the water-space, and the smaller chamber B is the superheating and mixing chamber.
At one side of the water-space A, andqwithin the walls a, is fitted the fire-box d, which is entirely inclosed and fitted with grate-bars 6.
Within the water-space are fitted the heating chambers and flues f, which are formed narrow and of sufficient height and length to extend nearly from front to back and from top to bottom of the water space. These fines or chambersf are placed side by side a short distance apart, and connect, by short fines g, from their upper portion, with the firebox d.
At the back of chamber f, and at thebottoin of the water-space, is a flue, h, connecting with chambers f and discharging into the upper part of the mixing and superheating chamber B.
At the forward part of the water-space is a pipe, 2'', extending downward and into the lower part of chamber B, to carry steam alone into the cylinder from the chamber A. There is also, in the upper part of the partition m, an aperture to allow steam to enter chamber B, which aperture is fitted with a valve, is, to shut off the steam at option.
.At the side of the chamber B opposite to that which the flue it enters is fitted a vertical fiue or chimney, I, which terminates near the bottom of chamber B and rises through the top of the chamber.
I have shown within the chamber B an engine consisting of cylinders n n and beam 0. It is preferable, when my boiler is used to drive an engine, to fit the cylinder within this chamber so that the heated products of combustion may be utilized for maintaining or restoring the heat to the cylinders. In case the engine is worked by steam alone steam will be taken from the pipe i, directly beneath the pistons, and condensed within the cylinders by jets of water or by a separate condenser, or the mixture of steam and heated gases in the chamber B may be used in the cylinders and condensed.
The products of combustion pass from the fire-box to the flues or chambers f, which are thereby kept heated, and by their large extent of heatingsurface rapidly and uniformly heat the water. As the heated gases cool they descend in the fines f and pass, by line it, to chamber B, within which they rise. The chimney l carries off the cool strata of gases from the bottom of the chamber B.
If the mixture of steam and products of combustion is to be used, the slide is will be opened to allow steam to pass directly to chamber B.
The boiler and furnace may be used as a heater by radiation, or the heated mixture may be carried from chamber B by pipes in any desired manner. The steam may be used at atmospheric pressure or under greater pressure, as desired.
