To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J EREMIAI-I C. GALVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Stretching Mattress-Springs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for the purpose of stretching the springs in wire mattresses or the like.

An object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed that it may be attached to the frame of a mattress and also to the springs secured thereto, and by proper manipulation serve to stretch the before-mentioned springs and retain them in their stretched. positions until they can be secured to the frame.

Another object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eliicient in use, and readily operated.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional View through the casing, and Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the sliding block and clamping member respectively. Fig. 6 is a face view of one of the clips.

Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally a spring mattress of any customary design, and comprising the usual rectangular frame formed with longitudinally extending side rails 2, connected at their opposite ends by transversely extending bars 3. When it is desired to stretch the springs 4 of this mattress, the frame may be placed upon suitable supports 4, and my improved stretcher, which is indicated in general by the numeral 5, applied thereto. This improved stretcher 5 comprises a substantially rectangular housing or casing 6, in which is swiveled longitudinally thereof a threaded threaded aperture 11, adapted to engage the 7 threads upon the rod 7 and upon the rotation of the handle 8 cause the before-mentioned block to move longitudinally within the housing. Oppositely extending hooks 12 are secured to the ends of the block 10, adapted to project through slots 13 formed in the vertical sides of the housing 6, for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Substantially parallel arms 14 are bolted, or otherwise secured, to the opposite sides of the housing adjacent the slots 13, and are provided upon their outer extremities with pins 15, adapted to engage the end of the frame of the mattress and prevent any lateral movement of the housing 6, while a suitable hook 16 is secured to the lower portion of the housing 6, over which one of the links of a chain 17 may be passed and extended beneath the supports 4: to the opposite end of the frame, which further aids in firmly securing the stretching device 5 to the mattress.

A spring clamping device 18, comprising a pair of substantially rectangular bars 19 and 20, the former of which is provided with a longitudinal V-shaped groove 21, while the latter is provided with a registering rib 22, adapted toengage the said. groove 21 and securely clamp therebetween the free end of the springs which have been removed prior to the stretching, is clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing. The rectangular members or bars 19 and 20 are each provided with a series of registering apertures 23 and 24, through which bolts 25 may be inserted to securely hold the members together and prevent the displacement of the mattress springs. Hooks 26, provided at one end with eyes 27, and upon the opposite end with upwardly extending fingers 28, are secured to the bolts 25, as clearly illustrated in the drawings, and are connected by means of chains 29 to the hooks 12, which chains are retained upon the said hooks by means of apertured clips 30, which engage the upper ends of the bolts which secure the hooks proper direction the clamping member 1.8

From the foregoing disclosure, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that after the device is secured to the mattress frame and mattress springs as previously described, when the rod 7 is rotated in the said housing for engagement with one end of a.mattress frame, a chain secured to the E opposite end of the frame for engagement with a hook formed on the housing, whereby the said housing may be more securely held 1 against displacement, a block slidable within the said housing, means for sliding the block within the said housing, and means for connecting the block with a mattress, substantially as and for the purposes described.

The combination in a device such as described, of a housing, means for securing the housing to the frame of a mattress, a block slidable within the said housing, means for moving the block longitudinally within the housing, and a clamping member adapted to be secured to the frame of the mattress, the said clamping device comprising a pair of sections, one of which is provided with a groove and the other with a rib adapted to engage said groove, this groove 'and' rib serving to prevent the displacement of the mattress springs therefrom, means for securing said section together against displacement, hoo'ks secured to the said sections, and means connecting said hooks with the slidable blocks, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
