Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, rate.
Application filed October 31, 1911. Serial No. 657,712.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that we, Josnrn F. YOUNG and O'URY J. Tnnow, citizens of the United States, residing at Tipton, in the State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVire-Stretchers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wire stretchers and has particular reference to a device of that kind which may be employed to stretch wire netting or single strands of wire.
With these and other objects in view as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel dc tails of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the device may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the inven tion.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clamp or holder used in connection with the stretcher. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the clamp and holder. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the clamp and holder,
showing the clamp in released posit-ion. Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the clamp and holder, showing the same in their clamped posit-ion.
In Fig. 1 a form of clamp is shown used in connection with a stretcher to hold either round or netted wire while the same is being tightened by the stretcher. As shown the clamp or holder consists of two coacting clamping bars 18 and 19 the former of which is provided with a longitudinally extending concaved bearing face 20 while the latter is provided with a longitudinally extending convex bearing face 21 adapted to engage with the face 20 for engagement with the fence wires. The concaved face of the member 18 is arcuate in section While the member or bar 19 is an elliptical segment. These two members are preferably formed of wood and the member 18 is provided at each end with a metallic cuff 22 while the member 19 is provided at each end with metallic cuffs 23 having integrally formed trunnions 2 The two members are operatively linked to each other by means of the links 25 one end of each of which is pivotally mcured to one of the cuns 22 while the other end is provided with a bore adapted to receive the trunnion 24 at the corresponding cuff 28. The link 25 at the upper end of the member 18 is so pivoted that it may be raised upwardly to disengage it from the trunnion of the member 19 which member, may be then raised upwardly and separated from the member 18 to permit the fence Wires being positioned between the two. The bar 18 is provided with a plurality of spaced U-bolts 26 the ends of which extend completely through the bar and are secured by means of nuts 27. This clamp is connected to the stretcher by means of a chain 28 provided at each end with a clevis 29 for engagement with the bight of one of the U-bolts 26 and provided intermediate its length with a swiveled hook 30 to engage with the stretcher.
In order to insure close engagement of the fence wires by the clamping bars 18 and 19 the inner faces of the bars are provided with lon itudinally extending channels in which are secured metallic strips 31 the outer faces of which are roughened to form gripping surfaces for engagement with wires.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the members 18 and 19 may be parted to permit the wires to be stretched to be inserted therebetween after which said members may be joined together and the chain of the clamp placed in engagement with a wire stretcher. When the latter is subject to a strain the links 25 cause the members or bars of the clamp to swing together whereby the clamping surfaces of the members 18 and 19 will be brought closer,
together and firmly clamp the wire therebetween.
From the foregoing it can be seen that we have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive to manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
What we claim is A clamping device consisting of a pair of bars, one of said bars having a 10ngitudinally extending concave bearing face, the other of said bars having a longitudinally extending convex bearing face, Wire engaging means carried by said bearing faces, links connecting the ends of said bars, and means for attaching one of said bars toa; Wire stretcher.
In testimony whereof, We afiix our signatures in presence of two wltnesses.
