To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOI-IN OUnNOw GREEN, citizen of the United States of America, residing at North Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hooks for watch chains, fobs and necklaces, and the object of my invention is to provide a two-part link or snap-hook and novel means for retaining the same in engagement with a swivel, whereby when the link or hook is broken, it can be easily and quickly renewed without dispensing with the entire swivel.
I attain the above object by a mechanical construction that is simple, durable, easy to manipulate and efficient for the purposes for which it is intended, and the details of construction will be hereinafter specifically set forth and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that such changes in the structural elements as fall within the scope of the appended claims can be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention.
In the drawingr-Figure 1 is a side clevation of a hook in accordance .with this invention, Fig. is a vertical sectional' View of the same, Fig. 3 is a similar View showing` the link or snap-hook thereof in an open position, Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the hook body,'and Fig. 5 is a plan of a retaining head forming a part of the hook.
In the accompanying drawing the refercnce numeral 1 denotes the body portion of the hook which is oval in cross section and circular in plan having a similarly shaped cavity 2 and the bottom of said body a circular opening 3 in communication with said avityt l')iametrically opposed walls of the opening 8 are provided with inclined grooves 4 and 5, theobject of which will presently appear. The top of the body 1 is provided with a central vertical stepped shank G having a central vertical opening 7 formed therein extending from the cavity 2 to the top of said shank. The shank is further provided with curved openings 8 adapted to receive the ends of a split ring or link 9, which is ronnected to another ring or link 10 adapted to be connected to a watch chain (not shown).
11 denotes a stationary hook member and 12 a movable retaining member, each of which is detachable and when one is set up in operative relation with respect to the other they eonstitut i a. snap hook. Each of the members 11, 12 has its upper end provided with a lateral extension 13, the extension ol` the member l1 extending in an opposite direction with respect to the extension of the member 12. The upper portion ot each ol the menibers 11, 12 extends into the ol'iening 5S and into the cavity 2, and to retain these elements within the body 1 a 'truste-conical shaped head 141; is employed. said heading having` oppositely disposed walls thereof provided with grooves 15 t0 receive the upper ends ot the member 11 and the member 12 thereof, these grooves coopera tingl with the grooves 4 and 5 in holdingl said elements in the frusto-conical shaped head in an elevated position. The upper end ot the head 14 is provided with a stem 1G adapted to extend upwardly through the opening 7 and between the ends of the. split ring or link 9, the upper end of said stem being threaded, as at 17 to receive a nut. 1S adapted to bear against the upper end oi the shank G and retain the head 14 in an elevated position, with the upper ends of the member 11 and the member 12 in the grooves 15 and L1 and 5.
The member 12 coperates with the bill 19 ot the member 11 in forming a link adapted to hold the ring or link ot the stem of a watch.l and to place the ring or link in the member, the head 14 is lowered, the member 12 swungl inwardly providing a space 2O between the lower end of said member and the bill 1i) otl the member 11. After the ring or link has been placed in the hook, the head 1-l is again elevated through the medium of the nut 1S and retained in an elevated position by said nut to hold the member 12 fixed relativel) to the member 11.
The lateral extensions 1? prevent the member 11 and the member 12 trom becoming accidentally disengaged from the body ofthe swivel when the head 14 is in a lowered position.
The 'nook in its entirety is iliade of strong and durable metal and can be made of various sizes.
What I claim iss 1. A hook comprising cavity and an opening 1n communication i with the cavity, a shank carried by the top ot' said body and having a vertical opening formed therein, a hook member having one end thereof extending into said cavity and provided with a lateral extension, a member 5 adapted to cooperate with said hook and f having one end thereof extending into said cavity and provided with a. lateral extension, a frusto-conical shaped head interposed between the ends of said members within said cavity, a threaded stem carried by said head and extending upwardly through said shank, and a nut screwed upon the upper end of a body having a said stem and adapted to bear against the upper end of said shank, substantially as described` 2. A hook comprising a body having a cavity and an opening communicating with the cavity, a hook member having its upper terminus provided with a lateral extension loosely mounted in said cavity, a retaining member having its upper terminus provided with a lateral extension loosely mounted in said cavity, said members depending from said body and cooperating to constitute a snap hook, a head interposed between and engaging the upper portions of said memn bers and adapted to maintain the retaining member from movement, and means whereby said head can be shifted to release the re.- taining member,

A hook comprising a body having a cavity and an opening communicating with the cavity, a hook member having its upper terminus provided with a lateral extension loosely mounted in said cavity, a retaining member having its upper terminus provided with a lateral extension loosely mounted in said cavity, said members depending from said body and cooperating to constitute a snap hook, a head interposed between and engaging the upper portions of said members and adapted to maintain the retaining member from movement, a vertically adjustablestem for shifting said head to release the retaining member, and means whereby said stem can be adjusted and maintained in its adjusted position.

A hook comprising a body portion, a hook member and a retaining member depending from and each having its upper end loosely mounted in said body portion and cooperating with each other to constitute a snap hook, said body portion having grooves for the reception of said members, a head interposed between and having grooves opposing the grooves of said body portion, said head adapted to maintain the retaining member in engagement with the hook member and further having its grooves receiving said members, and means whereby said head can be shifted to release said retaining member.
