CHAIN-HOLE CAP FOR CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 15, 1910.
Application filed October 8, 1809. Serial No. 521,753.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known thatI, ARTHUR J. BAZELEY, of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Chain-Hole Cap for Car-Couplers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a plan view of a portion of a coupler head showing my improved cap in place; Fig. 2 is a section on the line IIII of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section of the cap removed; and Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view of the cap.
Car coupler heads of the top opening type, are usually provided with an opening in the top for the lifting chain, or lifting member, which is actuated to move the looking member of the coupling into uncoupling position. Such couplers are frequently changed so as to employ bottom-opening means, using the same coupler head; and in such cases it is desirable to provide means for closing the top hole through which the 'old lifting chain or member passed.
My invention is designed to provide a closing cap for such holes, which is simple its construction; which can .be readily manufactured; which can be readily applied,- andwhich will be held securely in place until driven out bya blow [with a suitable tool from below.
A further object is, to provide a cap of this character which can be inserted into the hole from the top, and thus obviate the necessity for the removal of the operating parts of the coupler in order to put it in 7 designate ribs which extend from the back of each of the projections 5 to the central portion of the cap, the lower edges of said ribs being inclined upwardly and inwardly as indicated at 8. I
The diameter of the cap through the projections 5 is a trifle less than the diameter of the hole 3 in the top of the coupler head, and the walls of said hole diverge slightly downwardly from the top.
After the cap is inserted within the hole, its top 4 is flattened by being hammered down. This flattening process causes the ribs '7 to press outwardly against theprojections 5, and especially against the lower portions of the same, thereby forcing them tightly against the downwardly diverging walls of the hole 3. The cap in this manner is securely retained in place until driven out by a blow with a tool from below. The upper face of the cap when thus seated and secured in position is flat, without any depression to catch and retain moisture or dirt, and also making a neater and better appearance.
The cap can be manufactured at a low cost, and can be quickly inserted and secured in place, and as quickly removed when necessarv.
\Vhile my invention has been especiallydesigned for use in closing the holes of car couplers, it is obviously adapted for usefor closing holes in other structures.
Vhat I claim-is:
A hole-closing cap comprising an arched top, a plurality of projections extending downwardly therefrom, and ribs connecting the projections with the central portion. of the arched top, said top being adapted to be flattened to thereby expand said projections; substantially as described. 3
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto'set my hand.
ARTHUR J BAZELEY.
