Description
K. SZAFRAN. UAR UOUPLING. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 15, 1911.
1,61 3,906, Patented Jan. 9, 1912.
Wtwmeo j a ii sr'rns' GAR-COUPLING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KAZIMER SZAFRAN, a subject of the King of Austria, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car couplings, the object of the invention. being to provide an improved coupling to take the place of the ordinary three-link connec tion between tram cars or buggies, such as commonly employed.
A further object is to provide a coupling of this character whichmay be easily handled to couple the cars or buggies without any danger whatever of pinching the fingers between the links, which frequently happens with the ordinary three-link couplings.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in th claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation. Fig. 2, is a top plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a detail perspective view of casting 2, and Fig. 4, is a detail perspective view of one of the links 3.
The numerals 1, 1, designate the hooks on tram cars or buggies, which are connected by my improved coupling, which comprises an intermediate casting 2, and end links 3, 3. The casting 2 is formed with an opening 4 to receive the fingers of the operator, so that the upper portion of said casting constitutes a handle 5, which may be grasped to manipulate the coupling.
The ends of the casting are each provided with transverse openings 6 to receive the links 3, and these links 3 are made with cross bars 7, which are adapted to engage depend- Specifieation of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 15, 1911.

ing lugs 8 on casting 2 to limit the downward pivotal movement of the links.
By reason of a structure of this character, the operator may grasp the handle 5, and hold the links 3 in a comparatively horizontal position, and while grasping the handle 5, he may readily place the respective links over the hooks 1 without any danger of pinching his fingers between the links, which frequently happens with the ordinary threelink couplings.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations, as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A coupling of the character described, comprising an intermediate casting having openings in its ends, links positioned in said openings, and cross bars on the links engaging the casting and limiting the pivotal movement of the links, substantially as described.
2. A coupling of the character described, comprising an intermediate casting having openings in its ends, and depending lugs at the ends of said casting, links pivotally mounted in said openings, and cross bars on the links engaging said lugs and limiting the downward pivotal movement of the links, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KAZIMER SZAFRAN.
Witnesses:
