useful Safety Locking Device for Hooks, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement I in a hook, and consists of a lock snap for closing the throat, or opening of said hook,
for preventing a line or other object applied to the hook from disengagement or disconnection therefrom.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations respectively at a right angle to each other of a safety locking device for a hook embodying my invention.
Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a portion of the device in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates the body of the hook, and 2 the ring or eye thereof, which features are of themselves well known.
On the inner side of said body adjacent I to said hook is the perforated lug 3 which projects from said side into the throat or passage 4:, of the body of the hook, and consequently toward the nose 5 of the hook.
6 designates a clevis which consists at one end of the eye 7 Which isjournaled in the perforation or opening 8 of the lug 3, the loop 9 near the other end, and the finger piece 10 at the latter named end, said piece being adapted for conveniently operating the clevis in opposite directions.
The clevis is formed of a piece of heavy wire or round iron bent into the shape of said piece 10, 100p 9 and eye 7, one side member 11 of said loop being separated from the opposite side member -l2, whereby said loop is resilient laterally in its nature, and so may spread apart for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
The nose 5 has its outer faces 13 sloping Specification of LettersPatc-nt.

and converging from its outer terminal or point 14 toward the adjacent portion of the body of the hook, thus widening the nose at its base forming the shoulders 15 thereat. said shoulders joining the adjacent neck or portion 16 of the body 1.
The operation is as follows Patented"(1 013 26, I
The clevis is thrown back whereby the throat 4 is uncovered, and a line, link, another hookor other object is introduced into the loop portion of the hook through said throat, and seated in position thereon, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. The clevis is then thrown toward the nose whereby it bridges said throat and closes the same and the sides of the loop portionride down the sloping faces of said nose, whereby they are spread apart or separated until they clear the shoulders 15, when they close to.-
ward each other and spring or snap under the same and so engage therewith, thus interlocking the clevis with the nose and effec-. tively closing the throatv 4 and preventing opening of the hook whereby the object coupled is prevented from disengaging itself from the hook through said throat. i
The finger piece 10 now rests somewhat out of center on the outer wall of the body, at the swell thereof, and prevents inward motion of the clevis, causing'the loop 9 to retain its seat stationarily on the shoulders 15. When superior force is exerted on the finger piece, the members of the loop are I separated and so clear the shoulders 15, when they ride over the latter and consequently over the nose of the hook whereby the clevis is disconnected fromsaid nose and the throat of the hook is open.
Owing to the projection of the lug 3 from the body of the hook I avoid perforating and correspondingly weakening of thebody for the journaling of the clevis therein, and
so 1preserve the strength of the body.
aving thus described my invention what i I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is j 1. In a hook, a clevis forclosing the throat,
thereof mounted at one end of the hook and closable over the nose thereof, the said nose having lateral sloping'faces over which the clevis is adapted to be snapped and beneath the lateral extensions of which said clevis is firmly held.
2. Ina hook, a clevis for closing the throat thereof adapted to be mounted at laterally sloped faces and With which said. one end on the hook and having in its clevis may interlock and a finger piece at one length a resilient loop-like member, Said end extended at an angle thereto, said hook v hook having a nose Whose outer face is havingthereon a perforated lug cwhichis 15 5 sloping laterally and at Whose base is a adapted to project from the body of the shoulder, said member being adapted to ride hook and form the bearing for the jourover said face and close on said shoulder naled end of said clevis. and to be firmly held thereunder. GEORGE C. ROHRBACH.
