To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jenn V. GRABILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plattsmouth, in the county of Cass and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening De vices, of which the following is a specifica' tion, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in sharpening devices of that class used for sharpening or pointing jewelers peg wood, pencils, and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character having yieldably mounted cutting blades or knives, arranged in converging relation, and improved means for mounting or securing the body of the device on a work bench, table or desk.

My improved sharpening device comprises a body 1 preferably of U-shape, and formed by bending a metal plate as shown in Fig. 1 to provide a base portion, and two upright side portions or plates 3. Within the U shaped body 1, are two cutting blades or knives 4: arranged in downwardly converging relation and secured at their upper longitudinal edges to a pair of pivots or rock shafts 5, 6, mounted in the sides 3 of the body whereby the lower beveled cutting edges of the knives may swing toward and from each other. To permit the knives a to swing in unison or simultaneously, the pivots 5, 6, have fixed to their projecting ends, radially rojecting arms 7 which latter are oppose to each other and have their opposing ends formed with the meshing gear teeth 8. The two knives are actuated toward each other by a spring 9, constructed of a piece of resilient wire bent to form a coil and having one of its ends 10 bent at right angles and inserted in a transverse opening in one end of the shaft while the other end of said spring is bent to provide an angular portion 11, and terminates in an angularly projecting end portion 12, which is inserted in a transverse opening in the corresponding end of the other pivot 6, as clearly shown in Fig' 3. By constructing and arranging the spring in this manner, it will be seen that when a peg, pencil or other object is inserted between the two cutting blades, they will be spread apart by it against the tension of the spring, and when the object is removed, the spring will return the knives or blades to their normal position, shown in Fig. 2.
In order to permit the knives to be readily resharpened they are removably mounted in the body 1, by making inverted T-shaped slots 13 in the upper ends of the sides 3. The cross portions of said slots are hori zontally disposed and have rounded ends in which the pivots or shafts 5, 6, are mounted for rotation. The vertical upper portions of the slots 13 permit the pivots to be readily inserted in and removed from the body 1, and when said pivots are arranged in the slots, they are retained in the ends of the cross portion of the same by the meshing arms 7, and also by a retaining plate 14, provided at the opposite end of the body 1. This plate 1 1 is arranged between the spring 9 and the adjacent side 3 of the body, and has at its ends semi-circular shaped notches 15 which receive the pivots 5, 6. It will be seen that by moving the ends 10, 12 of the spring from the transverse openings in the two pivots, the retaining plate 14 may be readily removed, and after this has been done, the pivots 5, 6, and consequently the two knives may be readily lifted out of the body 1.
Any means may be provided for securing the body of the device to a support, but I prefer to removably mount the device on top of a work bench, table, desk or other support, indicated at 16, by providing upon the latter an anchoring block 17. This block may be screwed or otherwise secured at one of its ends on the support 16, and has the bottom face of its other end recessed as shown more clearly in Fig. 4;, for the reception of the base portion 2 of the body 1,
and to provide a projecting tongue 18 which fits in the said body between its upright sides 3.
Then the device is applied to the recessed end of the anchoring block, 17 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it will be securely held on the table or other support 16, but at the same time, may be readily removed by slipping it off the tongue 18. The latter is disposed directly beneath the knives 4, and is preterably formed with a recess or opening 19 which receives the shavings cut by the knives. If desired, the upper face of the tongue 18 may be grooved longitudinally as shown at 20, and the base portion 2 of the body of the device may be formed with an opening 21 arranged beneath the opening 19 in the tongue when the device is applied to the support as shown in Fig. 2.
In using the device, the peg or stick of Wood, the pencil or other object to be sharpened or pointed, is inserted between the knives 4E and then withdrawn so that the said knives will cut or shave oii a portion of the object, By repeating this operation, and varying the angle of the object as it is withdrawn from between the knives, the object may be tapered or pointed or given any desired sh ape. hen the cavity or opening 19 in the retaining block becomes filled with shavings the device may readily be slipped off of the block to permit the cavity to be cleaned. Likewise when the knives 4: become dull, they may be readily removed and sharpened.
I claim z- 1. In a sharpening device of the class described, the combination of a body, a pair of swinging knives having pivotal axes mounted in the said body, connections between the pivotal axes of the knives to cause the knives to move simultaneously to ward or from each other, and springs acting on the pivotal axes of the knives to normally dispose the knives in converging relation to each other.
2. A sharpening device of the character described, comprising a body, a pair of pivots removably mounted therein, opposing cutting knives fixed to said pivots and arposed on the ,on the base, and
ranged in converging relation, co-acting means on the two pivots for causing them to rock in unison, and a spring for actuating the pivots to move the knives toward each other.
3. A sharpening device of the character described, comprising a U-shaped body, a pair of pivots mounted therein, opposing knives fixed to said pivots and arranged in converging relation, arms on said pivots at one end, provided with meshing teeth, and a coil spring having angular ends fixed to the opposite ends of the pivots, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A sharpening device of the character described, comprising a U-shaped body having a base, and upright side portions the latter being formed at their tops with inverted T-shaped slots, a pair of pivots removably arranged in said slots, opposing knives fixed to said pivots, co-acting means on said pivots to cause them to rock in unison, a notched retaining plate between the opposite ends of the pivots, and a spring for actuating the pivots to move the knives toward each other.
5. In a sharpening device of the class described, the combination of a base, a U- shaped body having its centralportion disbase, an anchoring member having a tongue bearing on said central portion of the U-shaped support, said tongue and said central portion of the U shaped support having coincidento-penings, a pair of cutting knives having pivotal axes mounted in the sides of the said U-shaped support, connecting means between the pivotal axes of the knives to cause the knives to move simultaneously in reverse directions, and a spring act-ing on the knives to normally dispose them in converging relat1on to each other and above the said open- 5 mgs.
