Description

(No Model.)
- F.MUNGER. PLOW SHARPENER.
No. 395,292. Patented Dec. 25, 1888.
m M m m IINITED STATES PATENT @rrtcn,
FRED. MUNGE-R, OF ALLIANCE, NEBRASKA.
PLOW-SHARPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,292, dated December 25, 1888. Application filed September 6, 1888- Serial No. 284,717- (No model) To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED. MUNGER, of Alliance, in the county of Box Butte and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved plow-point-sharpening device. Fig. 2 a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section through Fig. 1.
This invention is an improved device for sharpening the cutting-edges of plow-points and colters; and it consists in the novel construction of and combination of parts in the implement hereinafter described.
Reference being had by letters to the accompanying drawings, A designates the base or anvil of the device, of general rectangular form and adapted to stand upon one end, B, which is provided with a horizontal slotted nib or lug, C, that is adapted to serve as a wrench by which the point or blades of the plow can be held and adjusted into properposition, and in which they can be held while their edges are being bent.
In the upper end of anvil A is a vertical recess, I), the upper portion of which is angular in cross-section, and the lower part may be cylindrical, if desired. In this lower por tion rests a coiled spring, E, which supports the block F, which block has an enlarged head, K, and a depending shank, L, fitting in the angular recess D, and its lower end is preferably rounded and shouldered, as at it", to engage spring E. In the rear edge of shank L is formed a recess or slot, M, which is on gaged by a screw, N, passing through a proper opening in the rear side of anvil A, and by which the block F is retained in the recess, but permitted sufficient vertical play. On the under surface of head K, in front of shank L, is formed a depending tooth or rounded sharpening-lug, O, by which the sharpening is accomplished.
In using the tool, the edge of the point or blade to be sharpened is inserted under head K, below lug O, the anvil being stood upright. The head K is then struck by a hammer, causing lug O to bite and sharpen the edge of the point by compressing it against the top of the anvil, the edge of the point being moved gradually under lug 0 until its entire length is properly sharpened.
This tool is especially designed to be carried on the plow, so that the points can be removed and sharpened cold on the spot.
The shank of block F serves as a guide to keep the edge of the point properly beneath the lug, so that its sharpening will be uniform. The spring forces up the block after, each stroke of the hammer.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the anvil having a slotted nib at its base and a vertical recess in its upper end, with the block F, having a shank fitting in said recess, and a rounded depending lug, O, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2 The combination of the anvil A, having a recess and a set-screw, with the block F, having a shank entering said recess and retained by said set-screw,'a11d also having a depending rounded sharpening-lug, 0, substantially as specified.
The combination of the anvil A, having slotted nib O at its lower end and vertical recess D in its upper end, the spring in the bot tom of said recess, and the set-screw N, with the block F, having an angular shank entering recess D and retained therein by setscrew N, and an enlarged head provided with a depending sharpening-lug, O, on its under surface, all constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED. MUNGER.
