PLUME-LEVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Blair. 28, 15H1..
Application filed May 20, 1910. Serial No. 562,470.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that l, ltonnnr E. Srivnns, a citizen ot the United States ot America, re siding at Hooper, in the county of Costilla and State ot Colorado, have invented new and useful improvements in Plumb-Levels, ot which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to plumb levels oi that class in which a hand or pointer movable by gravity is supported adjacent to a dial divided to indicate the degrees ot a circle, said hand and dial being supported by means ot a suitable stock or body.
rlhe invention has for its object to construct a device ot this class which shall possess superior advantages in point ot simplicity, durability and general etliciency, and in which provision is made for the convenientassemblage and adjustment ot the parts.
lilith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention, may
be resorted to when desired.
ln the drawing,Figure 1 is a perspective. view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section, illustrating a slightly modiied form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a top plan view, showing the modified construction. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail view of the dial and hand carrying member used in connection with the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
Corresponding parts in the several iigures are denoted by like characters of reterence.
The stock or body A of the improved level is composed of three strips, namely, two outer strips 1, 1, and an intermediate or center strip 2, said strips being suitably connected together. The two outer strips are each provided with a circular aperture 3,
and dials, such as 4, may be affixed or stamped in any suitable manner upon the portions of the faces of the center strip 2 which are visible through the side openings or apertures 8. Gravity hands or pointers 5 are mounted upon the ends of a stem or shaft 6 which projects through the dial portion of the center strip 2, and the side open- Vings are protected by transparent covers 7 ot glass. li oertures 8 extend from the side openings 3 pwardly through the upper edges of the side strips 1, 1, forming light apertures, the same being protected by a glass cover 9.
ln the modiiied form oi3 the invention illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 ot the drawing, the top edge o1 the center strip 2 is provided with a recess 10 having an inverted ti-shaped bottom forming a ridge 11 upon which a saddle S is adjustably supported, said saddle comprising a tcp piece 12 having depending side members 13, each stamped or otherwise provided with a dial 14 and with an upwardly extending pin 15 upon which a gravity indicator 16 is pivotally mounted. The saddle S is secured upon the center strip 2 by means of screws 16', one
at each end, and it will be readily seen that by loosening one of said screws and tightening the other, adjustment of the dial-carrying saddle may be had it it shall be necessary in order to true up the same. The side openings 3 and top openings 9 in the side members 1, 1 of the stock are retained, as in the construction previously described.
lt will be seen by the construction hereinbefore set forth that l have provided a simple and etticient level, and it will be further seen that under the modied form illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 adjustment of the dial members may be had. Owing to the presence of the top openings 8 the dials, although set back some distance from the outer faces of the side members of the stock, will be clearly visible, thus enabling the detlection of the indicator to be read correctly.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
n a level of the character described, a stock composed of a center strip and two outer strips securely connected together, said outer strips being provided with circular apertures and with openings extending from said .apertures to the upper faces of the strips, and said center strip being provided with a recess having an inverted V-shaped bottoni; ed; and transparent coverings for the seva saddle supported upon the ridge thus eral openings. 10 formed and having dials, pins extending In testimony whereof I aiix my signature from said dials, and gravity indicators pirin presence of two Witnesses.

cent to the ends of the top inelnber of the Witnessesz saddle and engaging the center strip with GRACE B. GOOD,
Which the saddle is thus adjustably connect- C. C. KERK.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
