Be it known that I, GUSTAV D. Sonnnnnno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safety pins and has for its object the provision of a safety pin of simpleconstruction and eflicient in operation.
The invention consists in the combina tion and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a safety pin embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a partial plan view of the body frame of said pin, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the body frame and pin point, Fig. 4c is a, perspective view of the catch or guard plate employed in the pin, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of said catch, Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the pin shown in closed position, and Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a modified form of pin also shown in closed position.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 comprises a body in the form of an elongated rectangular wire frame 1 having a pin point 2 resiliently se cured to one end thereof and traversing the body. At its other end frame 1 is provided. with a rectangular loop 3 bent upwardly at 4 to lie in a plane above the plane of frame 1, as shown. A catch or guard plate 5 is slidably mounted on loop 3 by means of side clips or tangs 6 bent over the sides of loop 3 from opposite sides, as shown. The sides of loop 3 are provided with recesses 7 adapted to cooperate with tangs 6 to yieldingly lock plate 5 in its innermost or outermost positions. The bend 4 serves as a stop to limit the inward movement of plate 5. Plate 5 is provided with an upwardly extending projection 8 at its point and a downwardly extending projection 9 at its end for engagement by the finger nail for Specification of Letters Patent.

By this construction it will be observed that in use pin point 2 may be inserted through cloth in the usual manner and placed within range of the movement of plate 5 whereupon plate 5 may he slid to cover the point of said pin and thus serve to guard and secure the same in'position. By arranging loop 3 above the plane of frame 1 pin point 2 may be inserted through cloth with little distortion or disturbance of the cloth and permit the same to lie flat to position and the pin itself will not project from the cloth but will lie flat and be practically embedded therein.
In the form of construction illustrated in Fig. 7 loop 3 is bent downwardly at 4 below the plane of frame 1 and the pin point 2 lies in the same plane as frame 1. This forms a very flat pin and one which will not project from the cloth upon which it is used.
WVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit ofthe invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A safety pin comprising a wire body in the form of an open frame having a pin point resiliently secured to one end of said frame and an open rectangular loop at the other end thereof, the said pin point traversing said frame and partially overlapping said loop; and a metallic guard plate slidably secured to the sides of said loop and arranged to cover the point of said pin; and yieldable means for locking said guard plate in operative or inoperative position, substantially as described.
2.
