To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR L. SMITH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Mounting Photographic Prints, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a device whereby a card or mount and a photographic print pertaining to it may be successively located in the desired predetermined relative positions, the print being accurately with reference to the edges of the mount.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,-Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a print-mounting device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 represent perspective views of parts of the device. Fig. 5 represents a section on line 55 of Fig. 1, the set-screws being removed from the part with which it cooperates. Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9, represent perspective views of details.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
In the drawings, 12 represents a flat bed, which is preferably composed of sheet metal pressed into the form hereinafter described. In the upper surface of the bed are formed a pair of guide grooves 13, 13, extending in the same direction, and another pair of guide grooves 13,13, extending at right angles to the grooves 13, the said grooves being preferably formed by depressing portions of the sheet metal bed, and being preferably merged into each other at their inner ends, as shown by Fig. 1, so that the grooves of each pair are continuous with each other and intersect the grooves of the other pair. In each of the said guide grooves is fitted a slide 14, preferably of the form shown by Fig. 3, and composed of a piece of sheet metal of cruciform shape, the longitudinal member of the piece being provided with downwardly projecting flanges 14 that bear on the sides of the guide grooves, while the transverse member is provided with upwardly projecting flanges 149, which project above the upper surface of the bed and constitute edge gages adapted to bear on the edges of a card or mount 15, as shown by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The slides 14 are movable in the guide grooves 13, 13, and, owing to the arrangement of said grooves, the slides and edge gages 1.4. thereon are all movable toward and from the center of the bed 12. The gages 14 stand at right angles to the guide grooves and the series of gages are therefore adapted to bear simultaneously on the edges of a rectangular mount 15. The slides 1d are in frictional engagement with the walls of the guide grooves so that they are adapted to be adjusted to any desired position re quired by the size of the mount, and when adjusted, they enable the mount to be accurately located on the bed in a predetermined position. The upper surface of the bed is provided with graduated scales, suitably numbered, as indicated by Fig. 1, to enable the operator to adjust the edge gages to the size of the mount.
The bed is provided with two swinging arms, which are hinged to opposite edge portions of the bed and are adapted to be swung back from the bed while a mount 15is being adjusted thereon and then to swing over the bed and the mount, said arms being provided with angular corner gages adapted to bear on the corner portions of a photographic print 16, the corner gages being adjustable and formed to bear on the four corners of the print so that when they are properly adjusted they will enable the print to be located with its edges at a predetermined distance or distances from the corresponding edges of the mount 15. Each of said arms comprises an inner portion 18 (shown in perspective by Fig. 4) provided with upwardly projecting sockets 19 constituting a hinged member which is engaged by a hinged pintle 20, with corresponding sockets 21, formed on the bed 12, the arms being thus connected with the bed so that they may be freely swung back to expose the bed and swung inwardly over the bed to locate a print on the mount previously located on the bed. Each of said swinging arms also comprises an outer portion 18*, which is adjustably connected, as hereinafter described, with the inner portion 18, said outer portion extending at right angles to the length of the inner portion 18 and being adapted to overlap the mount 15 and bear against one edge of the print 16. the edges of which are turned upwardly to form ears 18, between which are fitted to slide raised portions or bosses 18 formed in forming angular corner gages, each adapted to bear on a corner portion of the justment of the extensions 18*, and may be slide between the cars 18 to permit the adjustment of the extension 18 and may be secured at any position to which they are adjusted by means of set-screws 22 which pass through the bosses 18 and engage nuts 23 (Fig. 5) contained in said bosses. The heads of the set-screws are formed to bear on the edges of the cars 18". The outer portions 18* of the swinging arms are connected with the inner portions 18 of said arms by means which permit both a horizontal adjustnient of the upper portions 18 toward and from the hinges to regulate the extent to which the portions 18 overlap the mount 15, and also permit a vertical adjustment of the outer portions 18 to enable them to con These adjustments are permitted by the means next described.
2 1 represents an angular piece which connects the ann portions 18 and 18 and is provided with a base portion slidable upon the inner arm portion 18 and provided with a slot, the edges of which are bent upwardly to form cars 25 which bear upon opposite sides of the boss 26, formed on the inner arm portion 18. The connecting piece 2 1 is provided with a vertical portion 27 the upper end of which is bent over and provided with a slot 28 which receives a shank 29 formed on the outer arm portion 18, said shank having a slot 30 which receives a set-screw 31 passing through the vertical portion 27. The angular connecting piece 24: is adjustable longitudinally on the inner arm portion 18 and is confined in any position to which it may be adjusted by a setscrew 32, passing through the boss 26, en gaging a nut 33 contained in said boss, the head of the set-screw bearing on the ears 25.
The extensions 18 may be variable in length, each being provided with a slotted member 18 which is slidable upon a boss formed upon the extension 18 and is detachably secured thereto by a set-screw 32.
The outer arm portions 18 and the angular extensions 18 may be provided with suitable marks or graduations to guide the operator in adjusting the same. i
The inner arm members 18 are provided with hooks 35, which enter orifices 36 formed for their reception in the bed 12, the ends of the hooks bearing against the ends of the orifices to prevent wabbling of the arms when they are in operation.
The device is operated as follows: The
print-locating arms being upon the back to expose the bed, the mount edge gages 14 are adjusted to properly position the mount, which is then placed upon the bed, its edges bearing against the gages 14;. The swinging arms are then swung inwardly over the mount and their gages are suitably adjusted to overlap the mount to the desired extent and to properly position the mount thereon. The print is then located on the mount by the edge gages of the swinging arms.
The edges of the bed 12 are preferably provided with downwardly projecting flanges 12, which suitably stiffen the bed and raise it sufliciently above a table, on which it may be placed. The upper surface of the bed is preferably provided with depressions 12 to receive the tips of the operators fingers and enable him to conveniently raise the mount 15 from the bed. The bed is provided with bridges 12, which extend across the grooves 13, 13, and hold down the slides 14, said slides being formed to move under the bridges. The depressions 12 18 and 13 stiffen the bed 12 so that its central portion will not yield or'buckle under downward pressure. Said depressions may be of the same depth as the flanges 12 so that their bottoms will bear on the table on which the device is placed.
It will be understood that each arm portion 18 will, in practice, have two of the angular extensions 18 although only one of said extensions is shown on each arm portion in Fig. 1.
I claim 1. A print-mounting device comprising a bed having two pairs of gages adjustable independently toward and from the center of the bed for locating a mount thereon in a predetermined position, to which they may be adjusted, and two arms hinged to the bed at opposite portions and adapted to be located over a card positioned thereon, each arm being provided with adjustable angular corner gages adapted to locate a print in a predetermined position relatively to the previously located mount, and with means for securing said corner gages to the arms in any of the positions to which they'may be adjusted.

In a print-mounting device, a bed having guide grooves in its upper surface, and sheet metal slides, each composed of a longitudinal memberhaving downwardly projecting flanges movable in one of said grooves and bearing against the side walls thereof, and a transverse member provided with upwardly projecting flanges constituting gages being frictionally engaged with the walls of. the grooves by the said downwardly pro-' jecting flanges, and held by friction in the different positions to which they may be adjusted.
'3. A print-mounting device comprising a bed having gages adjustable toward and from the center of the bed, and adapted to locate a mount thereon, and a pair of hinge members located at opposite portions of the bed, a pair of arms, each composed of an inner portion having a hinge member connected with one of the bed hinge members, an outer portion presenting angular primlocating corner gages, and connections between said inner and outer portions having provisions for vertically adjusting the outer portion to conform it to the thickness of the mount.
4:. A print-mounting device comprising a bed having gages adjustable toward and from the center of the bed, and adapted to locate a mount thereon, and a pair of hinge members located at opposite portions of the bed, a pair of arms, each composed of an inner portion having a hinge member connected with one of the bed hinge members, and an outer portion presenting angular, print-locating corner gages, the inner portions of the arms being provided with downwardly projecting tongues and the bed with apertures which receive said tongues when the arms are in their operative positions.
