. E. LARSON RULING MACHINE GUIDE Filed April 5. 1922 Patented Aug. 14, 1923.
Uhlt 1 series EMIL LARSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
RULING-l /IACHINE GUIDE 7 Application filed April 3, 1922. Serial No. 5%,946.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL LARSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of illinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in B.uling-lilachine Guides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for ad justing the bar which guides the sheets on a feed table to a ruling machine and its object is to provide adjusting means which can be operated by the ruler without leaving his position adjacent the ruling pens and which, therefore, enables quicker and more accurate adjustments and tends to produce better and a greater amount of work with less labor on the part of the ruler.
Further objects of the invention are to -.-.provide means. conveniently located for easily and quickly adjusting the'sheet guide angularly on the feed table; to enable the adjustment of the sheet guidebodily to any desired position. on the feed table; to lock the sheet guide rigidly in any adjusted position; and to locate the adjusting and locking means adjacent the upper end of the stockfisupport so that the ruler may reach the same without leaving his position at the ruling pens. r
In the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated a selected embodiment of the invention and referring thereto F ig. 1 is a plan View illustrating the in- .vention embodied with those parts of a rul ing machine with which it is immediately associated;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pivoted base member of the adjusting means;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View on the line 4-4: of Fig. '1. V,
Referring to the drawings, 5 is a stock supporting table, 6 a feed table and 1nd1- cates generally the operative mechan sm of a ruling machine. My invention is adaptable to ruling machines of different varieties and for this reason and because it relates only to the sheet guide, I do not deem it necessary to show or describe more of the ruling machine since those skilled in the art will readily understand the. invention as 1t isillustrated and described herein.
The sheet guide 8 is carried by two parallel slide bars9, 9 and is adapted to be adtable by corresponding movement of said parallel slide bars.
A base plate 10 is pivotally mounted at 11 on the top or ion the underside of the stock table. I have shown the invention GX- posed on the top of the stock table but this is for illustration and I propose 'to provide a suitable covering for the invention when so used, or to place it on the underside of thestock table. This base plate rests upon the stock support adjacent the upper edge thereof and it is provided on its upper face with a fixed longitudinal guide bar 13 and with a clamping bar, 14 which is pivoted at 15 to the base plate 10 and to the plate 16 carried by the fixed guide bar 13. The slide bars 9 which carry the sheet guide 8 are arranged to slide on the fixed guide bar 13 engaging opposite edges thereof and a plate 17 fastened to the two slide barsprojects over the guide bar 13 and the clamping bar lt. Thus the two plates 16 and 17 fastened, respectively, to the guide bar and to the slide bars constitute guides for the bars to hold them in their proper relation at all times and yet permitting the adjustment of the slide bars relative to the guide bar and of the clamping bar relative to the other bars as desired.
A transverse bracket 18 is fastened to the base plate at the outer end thereof and it has a down-turned end located adjacent the edge of the stock support. Another bracket 20 is fastened 'to the underside of the stock support beneath the bracket 18 and it has an upturned end 21 located in front of and spaced from the down-turned end 19 and registering therewith. A screw bolt 22 is secured rigidly inthe down-turned end 19 by the nut 28 and it projects through the up turned end 21 and carries the knurled adjusting nuts 2d and 25 on opposite sides of said upturned end. By adjusting these nuts 24 and 25 the base and the bars carried thereon can be swung on the pivot 11 to adjust the'sheet guide 8 angularly on the feed table to a very fine degree in either direction. Then the nuts can be tightened to lock the base in its adjusted position.
The ends l3 and 14' of the bars 13 and 14 adjacent the sheet guide are formed into eyes to receive the bolt 26 which has its headed end seated in the eye 13 of the fixed guide bar 13 and its threaded end projecting through the unthreaded eye 14 of the clamping bar 14; and carrying a knurled adjust of the slide bar 9 and when the slide bars have been moved longitudinally to adjust the sheet guide bodily on the feed table the nut 27 is tightened to swing the clamping bar into clamping position against the edge off the adjacent side bar and to clamp said slide bar between the clamping bar and the fixed guide bar. The clamping bar with its cam provides a strong and eliicient locking device which can be easily applied or releas d by manipulating the. knurled nut 27. My invention pro-sides a simple but effective means whereby the sheet guide for a ruling machine may be readily and easily adjusted by the ruler without leaving his position adjacent the pens where he usually stands. The angularity ot' the sheet guide may be adjusted without releasing the clamp 14 by swinging the base on its pivot 11, this being accomplished by manipulating the knurled nuts 24: and 25. Thus the angularity of the sheet guidemay be adjusted to a very fine degree relative to the feed table and without changing the position'ot the sheet guide relative to the pens of the ruling machine 'andbecause this adjustment can be easily and quickly made the'ruler is enabled to keep his work more uni-term and with less labor than has heretofore been possible with guide adjustments which require the ruler to leave his post at the pens and walk around to the front of the feed table. And the sheet guide may be adjusted bodily across the feed table after releasing the clamp by sliding the slide bars 9 relative to the fixed guide bar 13 to any adjusted position, anda few turns of the knurled nut 27 will retain the clamping bar in locked po sition on its adjacent slide bar to hold the sheet guide rigidly in its adjusted position. I have illustrated the invention in a sim ple form which I have t'ound in practical use to be entirely satisfactory for the i1itended purpose but I am'aware that various changes in the form, construction and arrangement of? parts may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of the invention and I reserve the right'to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims I claim: j -1.
