HAT-PIN.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. WESTFALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mulvane, in the county of Sumner and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for fastoning ladies hats on the head of the wearer in such a manner that the hat is perfectly secured against accidental displacement or removal and the invention consists in an attachment secured to the inner side of the hat and having its head terminating apof the hat when the pin is inserted in the bore of the device.

The present custom of attaching a ladys hat to the head consists almost universally in inserting long meta-l hat pins through the side or body of the hat, and engaging the hair of the top of the head. The use of such pins frequently results in injury to the hair and as the said pins frequently extend entirely through the hat the projecting points form a means of danger to the general public. This latter defect is especially true in common thoroughfares, and even when the hat is not in use, such places as lodges, theaters, etc.

In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention and in which drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the hat fastening device constructed in accordance and showing the pin closed upon the frame. Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the pin portion withdrawn from the frame. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section taken through the center of Fig. 1. Fig. 4.- is a plan view of a pin provided with a single prong. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3 and looking in the direction of the arrow.

The numeral 1 designates what I term the casing of the device. This casing 1 may be constructed of any desired or preferred material and is centrally provided with a channel 2. Either integrally formed or secured to the side walls 3 of the casing are a pair of spaced strips 1 and 5, one of said strips being arranged adjacent the top of said frame while the opposite strip is secured adjacent the upper edge of the said frame. sides of the casing are provided with suitable eyelets 7. Both eyelets are perforated and are adapted for a securing element such as a thread, whereby the frame may be secured within the hat. Centrally provided upon the channel 2 of'the frame 1 is a longitudinally extending flat spring 8, the purpose of which will be presently set forth.

The numeral 10 designates the pin member of the device. This pin member as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings comprises a body member 11 having the head 12 provided with a pair of projecting prongs or pins 13. The body member 11 of the pin 10 is of a width corresponding to the width of the channel 2 provided within the frame 1 and it will be noted that as the pin 10 is forced into the channel its body 11 will be contacted by the spring 8 so as to eflectively retain the pin in its locked position upon the hat of the wearer. The lower portion of the frame 1 is preferably rounded as designated by the numeral 14:, and the inner lower face of the head of the pin is likewise rounded so as to prevent lateral movement of the pin within the frame. The head of the pin may have any desired ornamentation so as to add to the beauty of the head so as to completely obscure the pin when the same is in position. The outer face of the pin is enlarged, as at 15, so as to provide an offset portion whereby the pin may be readily grasped and removed from the head of the wearer when it is desired to detach the hat.

In Fig. at I have illustrated a pin with only a single spring or pin proper 16, the remainder being identical with the above description.

It will of course be understood that the pin members of the device may have their securing prongs at any desired angle so as to fasten the hat properly upon the head of the wearer, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the device, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction within the scope of the following claim may be resorted to if desired.

Having thus described the invention what I claim as new, is

In a device for the purpose set forth, a frame, said frame being formed with a channel, a spring member within the channel, one end of the frame being rounded, a pin adapted to engage the said frame, said pin comprising a body adapted to be inserted into the channel, said pin being further provided with prongs, an enlarged head for the body, said head being formed with a rounded port-ion adapted to engage with the rounded end of the frame when the pin is inserted Within the frame, and the under face of the said pin adapted to be contacted by the spring, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
