SAFETY-SHIELD FOR Pins.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. ROMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Shields for Pins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an attachment for pins and the primary object of the invention is to provide a safety shield or guard for the ordinary type of pin, so as to prevent the pin from being displaced and unfastened and to prevent the pin from sticking and scratching any one.

Another object of the invention is to provide a shield or guard for the ordinary type ofpin, which can be made of any color, design or material, so as to ornament the ordinary type of pin and give the same a neat, attractive and pleasing appearance and thus eliminate the usual unsightly appearance of the ordinary pin. i

A further object of the invention is to provide a shield of the ordinary type ofpin which provides a support for the head, the center and the point of the pin and thus prevent the pin from being torn from a garment and tearing the same;

A still further object of the invention is to provide a shield for the ordinary type of pin, in which a lock is provided for the head of the pin so that movement in relation to the shield is impossible and thus preventing the displacement of the pin.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a shield for the ordinary type of pins of the above character which is durable and eflicient in use, one that is simple and IIIBXDGIISIVB to manufacture and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable price. With these and other objects in view, the

invention consists in the novel construction,

arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated 1n the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved shield showing the same in use,

Referring to thedrawing in detail wherein similar referbnce numerals designate corresponding parts "throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generallyindicates the improved shield which is shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 as being formed from a single piece of material and bent intermediateits side edges to provide a central depressed portion 2 which is adapted to receivethe ordinarytype of pin 3 which includes the shank l, the head'5, and the point 6. The

depressed portion provided with a pair of enlarged spaced cut out portions 7 through which the material that is being fastened eX- tends and the cut out portions define a central supporting stud 8. an end supporting strip 9 for the pointed portion of the pin and another end supporting strip 10 for the head of the pin. The supporting strip 10 for the head projects slightly beyond the body of the shield 1 and the side edges are beveled as at 11 to meet the body and this strip is provided with. a groove or depression 11* for receiving the head 5 of the pin 4:

andthus lock the same against movement.

The strip 10 is positioned slightly beyond thebody so as to provide means whereby the head 5 of the pin 4 can be readily grasped by the thumb and forefinger to remove the same from. the shield when so desired.

The side edges of the body are bent clownwardly in opposite directions as at 12 from the central depressed portion and are bent back upon themselves as at 13 so as to strengthen the shield and not present sharp side edges. In using the improved shield, the shield 1 is laid on the place where the pin 4 is to be used. and the pin is stuck through the cloth adj acent the head supporting strip 10 and is then brought out and over the central supporting strip 8 and is three spaced tongues l7, l8, and 19 respectively are formed on the side edge 15 and the free ends of the tongues are inserted and held under the other side edge 16. Each of the tongues is curved as at 20 to provide a central depressed portion for the reception of the pin l. The tongue 17' which forms the rest for the head 5 of the pin is extended beyond the body 14: and is provided with a groove 21 for the reception of the head of the pin and thus prevent the dis placement of the same.

The shield in this form is used exactly in the same manner as the shield in the preferred form.

In Figs. 8 and 9 another form of the shield is shown and in this form the base plate 22'is bent intermediate its side edges as at 23 to provide a central depressed portion for the pin and the same is provided with a pair of relatively large spaced out out portions 24 which define the head supporting strip 25, which is provided with the groove 26 for the head of the pin, the central sup porting strip 27 and the end supporting strip 28. Immediately in front of the end supporting strip 28, a guard 29 is formed for the point of the pin, and the guard is provided by.bending the material upward. The sides of the body plate 22 are bent downward and then back upon themselves as at 29 to strengthen the plate and eliminate sharp edges on the sides of the plate. The shield in this form is used exactly in the manner of the shields of the other forms with the exception that the end portion of the pin is inserted between the-end supporting strip 28 and the guard 29.

It is to beunderstood that the shield can be made of any shape or form and of any color so as toprovide a neat and ornamental article and from any material and formed from a single or severalpieces as desired by the manufacturer.

Inpractice, I have-found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the accompany ing drawing. and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adop tion of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and? arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrimediate its side edges for receiving a pin,

and means for engaging the head of the pin for preventing relative movement of the pin in relation to the shield.

3. A shield for pins comprising a plate arranged to lie fiat upon a garment having a pair of spaced openings for the reception of the material to which the plate is to be attached, said plate being depressed intermediate its side edges for receiving a pin, said plate having a groove formed therein for the reception of the head of a pin to prevent relative movement of the pin in relation to the plate.

A shield for pins comprising a plate arranged to lie fiat upon a garment having a pair of spaced openings for the reception of the material to which the plate is to be attached, said plate being depressed intermediate its side edges for receiving a pin and having a groove formed adjacent one end thereof for the reception of the head of the pin to prevent relative movement of the pin in relation to the plate.

5. A shield for pins comprising a plurality of spaced tongues, said tongues being curved intermediate their ends, side bars joining the ends of the tongues, one of said tongues being provided with a groove for receiving the head of a pin, to prer ent relative movement of the pin in relation to the tongues.

6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a substantially rectangular plate arranged to lie flat upon a garment having a plurality of garment receiving openings therein, said plate being provided with a longitudinally extending depressed portion and a transversely extending groove, of an ordinary pin arranged to be received in the depressed portion and engaging the garment through the openings, the head of said pin arranged to fit in said groove, as and for the purpose specified.
