Description

C. E. COOKE.
HAT FASTENER- APPLICATION FILED AUG.8, 1914.
Patnted Jan. 11, 1916'.
NOGRAPH CO-. WASHINGTON, D C- THE orator.
CHARLES E. COOKE, OF ATLAKTTIC CITY, NEW
HAT-FASTENER.
' Application filed August 8,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHAnLss E. Coons, afsubject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective device for readily securing a hat upon the head of the wearer, and which will take the place of the usual hat pin and, furthermore, will obviate the necessity of punching holes or perforations in the hat and thus mutilating the same, as is the case when the ordinary hat pins are used.
The invention comprehends, among other features, the provision of a simple and effective device which can be readily applied to any form or shape of hat and which is preferably made of gold, silver or some other neat appearing metal, the device being so arranged and constructed wnereby the user, after placing the hat upon the head, can readily secure the hat against accidental removal by having certain pins forming a part of the device arranged to engage the hair and thus secure the hat.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a iart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View of a hat showing the device applied thereto; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the plate and showing the means for securing the same within the crown of the hat.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a hat 10 having the usual crown 11 and lining 12, with the usual brim 13 at tached to or formed with the crown 11. A plate 14, is provided with a series of apertures 15 and an edge 16 of the plate is formed to provide a longitudinal groove 17 defining the rib 17 as shown, and upon which are arranged to slide clamp members 18 of U-shaped formation, each consisting of a head 19 and a pin 20 projecting from the head and extending longitudinally to the plate, said pins 20 of the said securing Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, find.
191%. Serial lilo. $55,??8.
i the pins terminating in knobs 23 and whi h are preferably made larger than the apertures 15 and the pins 22 slide through the apertures 15, as shown.
ln'the application of the device described to a hat and in the use thereof, the hat is first placed upon the head of the wearer,
with the knobs closest to the plate 1 1, the
said bar 21 constituting a handle. The wearer now grasps the bars on each sideand, pushing upwardly and inwardly thereon, causes the pins 22 and the knobs 23 thereof to pass through the hair and secure the hat against accidental removal from the head, it being thus seen that when the hat is secured as mentioned the bars of the device will lie adjacent to the plates 14: thereof and the pins, passing into the hair, together with the knobs 23 of the pins, will tend to hold the hat in position and against dis placement.
It will be understood that the plate 14 and bar 21 can be removed from as readily as they can be applied to a hat.
it will be furthermore noted that with a device of the character described the perforating of the crown of the hat is obviated and the device, particularly when made up in gold or silver and appropriately ornamented with jewels or the like, will present a neat and effective appearance.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A hat fastener comprising an elongated plate having a longitudinally disposed groove adjacent one edge thereof, a Ushaped clamp embracing said edge and having a 1 portion disposed within the groove for retaining the same thereon for sliding movement, a fastening element carried by said clamp for securing the plate upon the hat,
and hair engaging means carried by said 1 plate.
2. A hat fastener comprising an elonupon the hat, and hair engaging means car- 10 gated plate having a longitudinally disposed ried by said plate. groove on one face thereof and defining a In testimony whereof I afliX my signature bead on the opposite face thereof, a in presence of two Witnesses.
U-shaped clamp slidably mounted on said edge and having one of its limbs positioned CHARLES COOIXE' Within the groove, and its opposite limb en- Witnesses: gaging said bead, a fastening element car- H. F. LETHERMAN, ried by the clamp for securing the plate FRED R. NEAL.
