SUSPENDERS,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. '7, 1911.
Application filed June 4, 1908. Serial No. 436,621.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES COHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing atl the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Suspenders of the sliding back type which are designed to yield freely with the movements of the wearer and my objects are to produce the Suspenders in such manner that they will permit the utmost freedom of motion with a minimum of friction and wear thereby promoting the comfort of the wearer and prolonging the life of the Suspenders.
I attain my objects in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1^ is an elevation of my improved suspender back; Fig. 2 an edge view, part-ly in section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 a view of a sliding strap opened to show the reinforcing strap Fig. et a sectional view on the line 4% of Fig. 3.
My suspenders comprise the usual shoulder straps l and Q and in order that they may slide freely with the motions of the wearer T do not rigidly secure them together where they meetin the back but make a sliding connection. This sliding connection is obtained, together with a swinging' or swivel motion, between the shoulder straps and the short strep 6 by using a two part metal trimming' the upper member 3 of which is provided with two parallel slots and the lower member 4; with a Single slot normally parallel to the two slots in the upper plate. A stud 5 connects the two members and forms a swinging or swivel joint.
A strap 6 is secured in the slot of the lower member a and carries the usual means for attaching the Suspenders to the back of the trousers. (Not shown). Rollers 7 and 8 are Secured to the tops of the slots in the upper member 3 to reduce friction. A first strap f) and a second strap l are secured to the ends of the shoulder straps l and 2 and pass, one through the lower slot and one through the upper slot, as shown in Fig. 2, working against the rollers 7 and 8. One strap is slightly longer than the other so that the finished suspenders will be symmetric? This construction permits one shoulder strap to lengthen or shorten with respect to the other when the shoulders of the wearer are raised and lowered. The swivel joint made by the stud accommodates the side to side motions of the back of the wearer.
ln order that the wear of the straps passing through the slots may be reduced to a minimum without unduly increasing the bulk of the Suspenders I secure a reinforce l1 on the inside of the Strap 9 by pasting, gluing, cement-ing or any other suitable means. This reinforce is smaller than the strap and is Skived or feather-edged all the way around as shown in Figs. 2 and it so that it cannot catch in the slot in Sliding through, and, as it is skived at the edges and does not come to the edge of the strap it reinforces is invisible when the suspenders are made up. The strain is transferred from the edges to the middle part of the strap and the life of the Suspenders is greatly prolonged. The other strap 10 has a like reinforce 1Q.
ln order that there may be no buckling or wrinkling of the sliding strap in the finished Suspenders prefer to use a form or die when pasting so that the straps when dry will have the required U-shape indicated in Fig. 2.
I claim A suspender back comprising a pair of Shoulder straps; a pair of slide straps secured 'to the front and back of the ends of the shoulder straps; a plate provided with two slots, one of said slide straps passing through an upper slot and the other through the lower slot therein; a reinforce strap MOSES COHEN.
smaller than the slide strap provided with a skved edge secured to each of said slide straps where it contacts with the slots; a second slotted plato; a stud swngngly con- 5 neet-ing the two plates; and a strap atj tached to the slot in the lower plate adapted to be secured to the garment to be supported.
