HENRY G. VOIGrI-IT, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR T0 RUSSELL & ERWIN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OE CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
' To ad whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Gr. Voleur, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following` is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in locks, the object being to provide certain improvements which make the lock capable of being adjusted quickly to various key changes.
In the drawings Figure l is a side elevation of a lock with the cap removed. Fig. 2 is a section on the line X-X. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the dead-bolt, with the fence removed. Fig. 4lis a view of said deadbolt from the under side. Fig. 5 illustrates two views of a detail.

represent tumblers, spring-impellcd in the usual manner and pivotally mounted to oscillate on the fixed stud 5.
The parts thus far described are of conventional design, save that the gated passage in each tumbler for the fence is of mor-e than the ordinary width, because of the unique character of the fence construction.
The fence is preferably made up of a plurality of adjustable pieces G-GHG, slotted as shown, and held partly by a screw 7, which takes into the tail of the. bolt 2, and by guide fianges 8 8 on said bolt tail. lVhen the screw 7 is loosened, it is obvious that these fence pieces may be shifted up and down, as desired. The fence pieces are preferably provided in a number to correspond with the number of tumblers which it is desired to use, in the present instance three being shown.
Instead of hitting the key to fit the particular tumbler arrangement shown, a key of any bitting may be employed and the tumbler and fence construction may be adjusted thereto by simply loosening` up upon the screw 7, turning the key to a point where it will start to shift the bolt, at which point the tumblers will have lifted the fence pieces Specification of Letters Patent.

to a height respectively determined by the heightto which each tumbler is lifted by i its respective bitting on the key. Then the parts are in this position, the screw 7 is set down so as to rigidly hold the fence pieces (3 6 in that position, namely. in the position determined by the bitting of the particular key employed in setting the lock and in which position said fence pieces will pass through the gated passage-ways in the tumblers. A correspondingly bitted key will now always operate to move the tumblers to the right position to permit the bolt to be thrown to and fro. If at any time it is desired to substitute a key having another hitting. it is merely necessary to release the screw 7 and repeat the operation above described, whereupon the lock will be quickly adapted to the new differently bitted key.
By this construction the work of adapting different locks to the different key changes is vastly simplified, since heretofore it has been necessary to adapt the key to the particular tumbler condition rather than adapt the tumbler and fence condition to the particular key.
What I claim is: f
1. In a lock, a bolt, a tumbler having a gated passage, and a fence carried by the bolt and arranged wholly within said gated passage, said fence being adjustable to different key changes.
Q. In a lock, a bolt, an adjustable fence mounted thereon and shiftable thereon transversely to the direction of movement of said bolt, and a tumbler arranged to coact with said fence to lock said bolt both in and out.
3. In a lock, a bolt arranged for reciprocation, a tumbler arranged for oscillation only, and an adjustable fence mounted on said boltand adapted to said tumbler, said fence being shiftable on said bolt in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of said bolt, said tumbler being constructed to lock said bolt both in and out by co-action with said fence.
