To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK G. Fawnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im provenient in Document-Files, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates particularly to document files employing a plurality of pockets or envelops of uniform size and shape; and my primary object is to provide an improved file of the character indicated which can be cheaply manufactured and which possesses advantages in point of accessibility to the contents of the pockets or individual receptacles and also in the freedom from danger of spilling the contents of the receptacles when the le is in use.

The flap side (reverse side) of each envelop is provided with blank spaces 5 adapted to receive an index of the contents of the individual envelop. By preference, the flap 2 of each envelop is scored at a short distance from its edge, as indicated by the dotted line C, togiv'e a certain amount of expansibility to the file, and the portion of the iap between the line 6 and the edge ofthe'liap is secured to the surface of the adjacent envelop by gumming, gluing, or in any suitable manner. According to this arrangement, the openings 7 of the individual envelops are located at the lateral edge of the tile, at which the envclops are connected together. Owing to this method of arranging and connecting the envelopsv in series, it is impossible for any individual envelop, when the file is open, to hang or depend with its open edge forwardly, and thus my invention obviates the possibility of the contents of the envelops being accidentally emptied or dropped out.

The closed or back edge of the lile, considered as a file, is indicated at 8, and the open or front edge of the file, considered as a file, is indicated at 9. 'The file is preferably provided with a tape or band 10 for use in securing it in closed condition. Then the individual receptacles or envelops are filled, the gorings or creasings 6 in the flaps of the envelops permit a certain amount of expansibility to the file. y

The file may be constructed of envelops which may be purchased on the market, or envelops may be made especially for use in the construction of the file. Such a file may be cheaply manufactured, ismgeeedingly handy in use, and the contents are secure against accidental loss in the handling ofthe file in the open condition.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in View of the prior art.

'What I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A file of the character set forth, comprising a plurality of envelops arranged in series with the iaps of the envelops at the same'edge of the file and presented 1n a comy mon direction, the free edge portion of the flap of one envelop being secured to the adjacent envelop near the flap edge thereof, and so on throughout the series.

2. 'A file of the character set forth, cornprising a plurality of envelops of the same size and shape arranged inseries with the flaps ofthe envelops at the same edge of the file and presented in the same direction, the flap of one envelop being secured to the adjacent envelop, and so on throughout the series, and a cover-section connected with 'the nfree Hap of the last envelop of the series.
