To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. CLUcUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bed bottoms and has for its object the production of a resilient support for a bed bot tom which will be of durable and economical construct-ion, one which will not be suscepti ble to readily becoming inoperative, and one which will be etlicient in operation.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view my invention consists in an improved support for bed bottoms characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a bedstead to which is applied a construction embodying the preferred form of my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section on line m-a2 of Fig. 1, Figs. 3 and 4: are enlarged transverse sections on lines 7 -3 and 22 respectively of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal section on line 20 of Fig. 2.

Referring now to the drawing 1 indicates an ordinary bedstead comprising the posts 2 and the longitudinal side rails 3 which extend between the posts 2 at corresponding sides of the bed, said rails being angular in cross section. Arranged centrally upon the upper side of each of the slats 4 are two spaced vertically extending posts 5 the flared bases of the latter being rigidly secured to said slats. In the bifurcated upper extremities of the posts 5 are fulcrumed transversely extending levers 6, the inner ends of said levers overlapping and being operatively connected through a pin 7 projecting from one of said ends and which loosely engages an elongated slot 8 provided in the other. tion,'it Will be observed, that operation of one lever will effect a simultaneous similar operation of the other.

Arranged under the outer ends of each of the levers 6 is a torsional spring 9 the ends 10 thereof being rigidly secured by staples or other securing devices 11 to the upper surfaces of the end of the adjacent slot 4. The bight end portion 12 of each of the springs 9 engages the outer end of the adjacent lever 6 close to the outer extremity thereof, said bightbeing looped in form, as indicated, in order toprevent displacement. The outer extremities of the levers 6 engage channel bars 13 provided at the ends of the bed bottom 14, the latter, with the exception of said end bars being of any ordinary or preferred construction. By the provision of the channel bars 13 at the ends of the bed bottom a constant engagement of the ex tremities of the levers 6 therewith is insured.

With the construction as set forth it will be seen that the bed bottom will be indirectly resiliently supported by the torsional springs 9. By the provision of the levers 6 connected as described a constant horizontal disposition of the bed bottom, notwithstanding the unsymmetrical arrangement of the body thereon, will be effected, since by so connecting the levers 6 at corresponding ends of the bed, when the outer end of one is lowered by reason of the body resting directly thereover, the outer end of the other lever cooperating therewith will simultaneously be lowered to the same position.

The support for the bed bottom as set forth is of simple construction, hence may be manufactured at a low cost, and the same is of great efficiency in use.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

The combination with a bed having side rails consisting of angle irons having a vertical and an inwardly extending horizontal flange and a bed bottom, of means for resiliently supporting said bed bottom, said normally forcing the outer ends of said levers upwardly, substantially as described.
