Description

' dinard time VNOAH DICE,OF XENIA, INDIANA.
Letters Patent N 98,572
, dated January 4, 1870.
VIMPROVED BUCKLE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and mking part of the Same- To,allwhom tit may concern:
Be it known that I, NOAH DICE, of Xenia, in the county of' Miami, and State of Indiana, have invented an Improved Buckle; and I do hereby declare that the tbllowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is atop view,
Figure 2 is a bot-tom vien', and
Figure 3 is a section on line x :1: of fig l.
The same letters are used to designate identical parts in the several figures.
My invention relates to a buckle, more particularly designed to be used on stirrup-straps, to lengthen o1 shorten the same; and
My improvement consists in the construction ,of its frame, and the arrangement of the tongue therein, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, in the drawings, represents the frame of a buckle, made of cast-iron or other suitable material, and consist-ing of a rectangular piece of metal, of suficient thickness to have a groove, al, forme-d in its upper surface, wherein the tongue is t-o be placed. l
Io make the lramc as light as possible, its sides` and one end are bevelled, as shown in figs. 1 and 3, leaving its upper surface justAvide/enough for-the groove or recess.
Upon its under surface it is provided with strips, a' a', running lalong its sides, and loops, A1, formed by cross-bars extending across from strip to strip, as shown in fig. 2, all `cast in one piece with the frame.
A2 is another loop, formed 'upon one end, for the purpose of' receiving that end ot' the stra-p which'is to be permanently secured to it. Y
B represents the tongue, provided with a pmor stud, B', at one end. It is to' be formed as shown '1n fig. 3, so that when it is placed in the recess and plvoted in the frame,'it can be held by th action of the spring C, insuch a position that its upper surfaceis `flush with the upper surface of the frame A, and its stud projects through a perforation therein, a sntiicient distance to penetrate a strap to be confined in the device.
By depressing the end laying upony the spring, the stud is retracted so as to release the stra-p.. l
llle tongue is of nearly the samelength and Width as the recess a, so as to entirely cover the same.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The buckle herein described, consisting of the frame A, tongue B, and spring C, all constructed and arranged with reference to one another, as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specitication, in the presence of two subscribing GEORGE DARE.
