j UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. ETHELL AND MARQUIS D. L. SWANK, or ANDERSON, INDIANA.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,872, dated August 7, 1883.
Application filed June 20, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. ETHELL and lVIARQUIS D. L. SWANK, citizens of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Button-Fasteners; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to button-fasteners for shoes and the like; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is not only to afford a fastener for shoe-buttons which shall be inexpensive and readily applied, but which shall also provide for an adjustment of the button in the fastener at will and to these ends we employ the mechanisms fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a shoe with our improved fastener in position; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the fastener detached, and Fig. 3 a similar view of a modified form.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of our improved fastener, having loops a and prongs I). The prongs are adapted to be passed through material D of the shoe and be bent down against the under surface. The body lies, when in position, at approximateright angles to the plane of the front or side opening of the shoe, and is received in the eye 0 of the button 0.
In shoes of this class it frequently occurs that it is desirable to set the buttons back when the shoe has become loose, or, in case of a new shoe, to set them forward for comfort.
, By the employment of our invention it is only necessary to press inward on the button until the eye is disengaged from the hook and move it in either direction until it engages with a desired loop. This is accomplished readily and without disturbing the fastener. It allows a person with swelling feet to readily adjust the shoe to his convenience in an instant, and serves all the purposes of a substantial fastener in other respects.
Modifications in details of construction may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of our invention, the essential features of which rest in the means for ready adjustment of the buttons.
The fastener may be covered by a slitted sheet of leather or the like, if desired, applied to the shoe material above the fastener.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. Abutton-fastener having securing-prongs adapted to be projected through the material of the shoe, and bent down upon the inner surface thereof, and having loops for adjusting the position of the button without removing the fastener, as set forth.
2. The button-fastener A, having loops a and prongs b, adapted to be secured to the material D and button 0 0, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM. J. ETHELL. I MARQUIS D. L. Sl/VANK. Vitnesses HARRY ETHELL, G. K. McOULLoUeH.
