Description
COT ATTACHMENT FOB- INVALID-BEDS.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN C. VAN SLYKE, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Fort Collins, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Cot Attachment for Invalid-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for beds and is more particularly a device for handling helpless persons.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a hammock like structure designed to lit beds of different widths.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the frame of the body of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cover used in connection with said frame to constitute the body. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through one corner of the frame and showing one of the adjusting devices.
The present invention includes a body consisting of a frame and a cover therefor. The frame, which has been shown in detail in Fig. 1, consists of a tubular side member 1 connected, by elbows 2, with tubular end members 3. Each of these end members is open at one end and has a partition 4 arranged therein and provided witha threaded aperture 5. Another tubular side member 6 is arranged parallel with the member 1 and is connected at its ends by elbows 7 with tubular extensions 8 arranged to slide within the open ends of the tubes 3. A partition 9 is arranged within each of the extensions 8 and a boss or extension 10 is formed on each elbow 7 the said boss being provided with an aperture 11 registering with the opening 5 and another opening 12 which is formed in the partition 9. The openings 11 and 12 are designed to receive the UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

along the screw in one direction while a pin 16 or other suitable device may be arranged upon the screw at an intermediate point so as to prevent said parts from sliding along the screw in the opposite direction. Buttons 16 are arranged along each of the side tions of a canvas cover 17, there being but- I ton holes 18 within this cover which are adapted to receive the buttons 16.
An opening 19, preferably triangular in form, is formed within the canvas cover ad jacent the center thereof, and is designed to be normally closed by a substantially triangular flap 20 which is secured along one edge to the cover 17 and is adapted to be extended across the opening. The small free end of this flap is insertible through a slot 21 and is adapted to be held therein by means of buttons 22 or the like. Obviously when the flap is thus secured the opening 19 is maintained closed.
Each of the extensions 8 is provided, close to the elbow 7 with a split collar 23 the terminals of which are connected by a bolt 24. Similar collars 23 are clamped about the end members 3 close to the elbows 2.
The bolts 24- connecting the ends of the collars 23 at one end of the body frame may be detachably engaged" by hooks formed at the ends of supporting devices, not shown.
While the body of the attachment is elevated the flap 20 can be unfastened from the button 22 and removed from under the opening 19 after which a bed pan can be placed thereunder.
Importance is attached to the fact that the device can be readily attached to different forms of beds and does not require any special construction thereof. Moreover the attachment is very simple and inexpensive in construction and will not readily get out of order. By turning the screws 13 the exten sions 8 can be shifted longitudinally in either direction within the tubular members 3 and the side bars 1 and 6 can thus be moved toward or from each other. By moving them away from each other the cover17 can be Moreover this adjustment of the frame permits the device to be fitted to beds of different widths.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departlng from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention defined in the appended ctain'is.
\Vhat is clain'ied is:
1. An attaehn'ient of the class described ineludin g tiulmlar side meml'iers, tubular end men'ibers fixed relative to one of the side men'iheii's, extensions upon the other side member and slidably mounted Within the tubular end n'iei'i'ibers, and adjusting screws revolubly mounted Within said extensions and engaging the end members, and a cover secured to the side members.
2. An tltlltICiil'l'lEl'lt of the class described including tubular side men'ibers, tubular end members fixed relative to one of the side mei'nbers, extensions upon the other side member and slidahly mounted Within the tubular end members, adjusting screws carried within said extensions and engaging the end members, a cover detachably secured to 985,306 r l i J the side men'ibers and suj'iporting elements conmeeted to the cornelhp'firtioiis of the trame..
An attachn'ient of the class described including side members, tulmlar end members fixed relative to one of the side members extensions upon the other side member and slidably mounted within said tubular end. members, an adjusting screw swivel ed within each o't said extei'isions and threaded in'tothe adjoining tubular end mei'ub-er, means located beyond the extensions and their side member tor rotating the screws and a (cover secured to the side members.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have liu'ereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
