To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. VENARD, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to brackets, having more particular reference to a device of this type particularly adapted for application to piles for facilitating the construction of scaffolds thereon, and has for its primary object the provision of a novel construction of this type that can be readily and securely positioned on the piling.
A further object resides in the provision of a construction of this type, the body portion of which can be adjusted to insure of its being maintained in proper position under adverse conditions.
With the above and other objects in view, to be referred to as my description progresses, my invention resides in the features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention as in use, a portion thereof being broken away. Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof, a portion being broken away. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation, with parts broken away, showing the device as applied to a leaning pile.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, 1 indicates the body portion of the bracket, and 2 and 3 bearing parts therefor, the former consisting of a block on which the said body portion 1 is fulcrumed, by a pivot 4;, while the latter comprises a pair of spurs which are adapted to be embedded in the pile or other support, as 6, and'thereby act conjointly with a suitable tie, as 5, in securing the device in position.
To insure of body portion 1 being properly positioned on leaning piles or poles, I connect the same with bearing block 2 for relative bodily adjustment in inward and outward directions, such connection residing in adjustably supporting the pivot 4, the same having its opposite end portions adapted for reception in any of the seats of the respective series of seats 7. These series of seats 7 which extend in an outward direction are formed in the checks 8 of block 2, the said cheeks extending from the end bearing wall 9, which is preferably curved to conform to the contour of the pile (see Fig. 2) and projecting on respective sides of the upper portion of body 1.
Tie 5 is engaged wtih an eye 10 and keeper 11, provided on respective checks of the bracket, to have its leads normally extend below pivot 4 thereof, whereby the body portion 1 is held under the desired ten sion and obviously prevented from accidental upward swinging.
In applying the bracket, pivot 4 is properly engaged with the desired seats of block 2, this depending on the position occupied by the pile (see Figs. 1 and 1), then with block 2 engaged with said pile tie 5 is passed around the latter and made fast to keeper 11. Body 1 is now swung downwardly until bearings 3 engage the pile, as clearly shown.
In use, a number of piles are thus equipped, and the desired scafiold completed by placing timbers thereon, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, 1s:
1. A device of the type set forth comprising a bearing block provided with a series of seats extending in an outward direction, a bracket provided with a pivot adapted for engagement in any of the seats of said series, and a securing means for said bracket.
2. A device of the type set forth comprising a bearing block provided with a series of seats, a bracket having an adjustable pivotal connection with said block, and means carried by said bracket adapted to retain said pivotal connection in a predetermined position and secure the device to a support.
