To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN C. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in toys, and as illustrated, represents an automobile ladder truck.
The object of my invention is to form the body of the truck from a single sheet of metal.
Another object of my invention is to provide a toy of this class with ladder supporting extensions, whereby ladders are detachably supported upon the truck.
Another object of my invention is to pivotally support a ladder upon a toy of this class at one end with means for automatically raising the ladder upon the truck upon its release.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for adjusting and locking the front wheels in various positions.
The features of my invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved automobile ladder truck. Fig. 2 is a blank of the body of the toy. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line a:, Fig. 1, through the swinging ladder with the ladder support shown in elevation. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail central vertical section through the rear ladder support and ladder. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail central section through one end portion of one of the extension ladders illustrating the means for detachably connecting the extension to the swinging ladder. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the forward portion of the ladder truck,
illustrating an engine casing over the front wheel axle. Fig. 7 is an enlarged section on line w, Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a section on line 3/: a s- The body is constructed from a single blank, in which the medial portion 1, when the blank is bent on the lines 2, forms the top of the body.
3, 4, represent the sides which, as illustrated, are provided with a series of orifices or openings 6 to represent a ladder as supported upon each side of the body.
Specification of Letters Patent.

7, 8, represent extensions from the sides forming supports for the rear wheels.
9, 10, represent extensions from the sides at the opposite ends forming supports, when bent into shape, for the front wheels.
11, 12, represent medial extensions from the sides 3, 4, with the corners notched to provide the steps 13, and guards 14, when bent along the lines 15.
16, 17, represent ladder supporting racks secured on the top of the body, having hook extensions 18, to receive ladders upon each side of the body.
19 represents a ladder pivotally mounted at 20 to the rack 16; and 21 represents a. spring fixed to the ladder and support, forming means for automatically swinging the ladder to the vertical position when released at its opposite end from engagement with the hook 22, formed upon the support 17. The side ladders are provided with a notched plate 23, engaging two of the cross step bars, forming means for securing the ladder to the swinging ladder section.
As illustrated in Fig. 6, the forward portion of the body is formed to represent an engine casing 24, which construction provides but a slight change in the forward portion of the blank, illustrated in Fig. 2, without departing from the features of my invent-ion. The step 13, in this instance, is carried forward and thence bent upwardly forming a mud guard 25 for the wheels, which mud guards are each provided with a lip 26, projecting through a slot formed in the sides of the body and thence bent over to rigidly secure the mud guards in position, as illustrated in Fig. 7. The same construction being carried out for the rear wheels.
This toy is made to represent what is known as a locomotive toy, wherein an inertia wheel is provided to drive the same. It is desirable, in some instances, to have the toy travel in a circle as well as a straight line, and to accomplish this the following instrumentalities are provided. The front wheels are preferably mounted to a truckframe 27, said truck being pivotally supported with a forward portion of the body, as illustrated in Fig. 7. 28 represents an upward extension of said frame 27, adapted to engage into one of the notches 29, formed. in a downward extension 30 of the body. By this it will be seen that the wheels can be adjusted to an angular position, relative to the body, to cause the toy to travel in a circle, or, When the wheels are set parallel with the body, to cause a straight path. Having described my invention, I claim 1. A toy of the class described, having'a top, t o sides and steps formed from a single piece of metal, sheet-metal ladder-supporting racks secured upon said top, hooks formed in said racks for detachably supporting ladders, ears formed on one of said racks bent at right angles thereto, a ladder pivotally securedto saidears, a catch formed in swinging the ladder to a vertical position the toy to travel in upon its release from engagement with the catch.
