CLOSURE FOR JAR-S OR THE LIKE.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE GABLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairpoint, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closures for Jars or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures fo-r milk jars and cans or the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which may be easily and quickly locked upon the neck of the jar and which can be only removed from the same by a person having a key for the lock of the closure.
Vith the above object in view and others that will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construct-ion and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying dra-wing there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention and in which,

In the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 designates the top of the jar employed for any desired purpose and the numeral 2 the locking closure thereof. It is to be understood that while I have illustrated the closure in applied position upon the jar the same may be employed in connection with other receptacles, such as cans orthe like. The closure 2 illustrated in the present instance comprises a pair of sections constituting the base portion 3 and a lid or top 4c of a greater diameter than the base. The base 3 is provided upon opposite sides of its center with a. pair of spaced guide members 4 arranged so as to communicate with the periphery of the said member 3 upon its opposite faces. The guides 1 are adapted for the reception of` suitable bolts 5. The bolts 5 have their lower outer edges beveled as at 6 and are adapted to slide firmly between the said guides 4.. nermost guide members 4 are shorter than the outer guide members and that the said inner members terminate a slight distance away from the center of the base 3. The locking members 5 have their adjacentfaces provided with suitable notches G arranged in direct alinement with each other and have ing their outer walls terminating in a line with the inner transverse faces of the inner pair of guide strips 4:. The lock members have their opposite longitudinal faces provided with suitable slits and these slits are adapted for the reception of iiattened resilient elements 7. The elements 7 are adapted to exert an outer pressure upon the bolt members 5 and the limit of movement of the said bolts is regulated by the said resilient elements 7 contacting with the inner faces of the longer guide strips or members 4. By this arrangement it will be noted that the beveled edges of the bolts 5 normally project outwardly so as to readily engage within depressions or cut away portions 8 provided upon diametrically opposite sides of the neck 1 of the jar. The top i for the closure is provided with a suitable key hole slot 9 arranged centrally thereof and the said top or cap is also provided with suitable openings adapted for the reception of threaded securing elements 10 whereby the said top is secured to the base 3. The base 3 is provided with a central depression 11 from which there is extended in opposite directions radial slots 12 and the depression 11 as well as the slots 12 are adapted to form a suitable pocket for the reception of the oppositely disposed faces 13 and pintle 14: provided upon a key member 15.
It will be readily noted that when the key 15 is inserted within the key hole 9 the same has its faces 13 positioned so as to contact with the walls provided by the notches 6 of the lock members 5 and it will be observed that by merely rotating the key within the notches 6 the said bolt members 5 will be forced inwardly out of the path of the periphery of the base member 3 so as to allow the closure to be readily withdrawn from the neck of the jar. By reference to Fig. 6 it will be noted that as the key 15 is revolved a certain distance its faces 13 will be positioned within the slots 12, while at the same time the said faces still contact with the walls provided by the notches 6. When the key is in this position it will be observed that the resilient elements 7 exerting opposite pressure force the faces 13 tightly against the walls of the pocket provided within the base 3, thus pro viding a means whereby the key 15 serves as a handle for removing the closure from the neck of the jar. The advantages of construction and method of operation will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principles of operation together with the apparatus as I now consider the best embodiment thereof I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is merely illustrative and that such changes within the form and proportions of the device as are within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to if desired.
The base member 3 is provided with a pair of projecting studs 1G positioned adjacent the outer walls of the slots 12 whereby the movement of the key 15 is effectively limited and whereby the faces 13 of the said key are at all times retained withinthe notches 6 when the said key is positioned within the key hole slot 9 of the closure.
I-Iaving thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination with a receptacle having oppositely arranged depressions, a closure for the receptacle, said closure comprising a spaced top and a base member connected together, the top having a key-hole opening, the lower member being provided with bolts, resilient elements for normally forcing the bolts beyond the periphery of the closure, a pair o-f guides for each of the bolts, one of each pair of said guides adapt ed to'be contacted by the resilient element to limit the movement of the bolts beyond the periphery of the closure, the bolts being each provided upon their inner faces with depressions, and the lower plate being provided with a central depression having radial slots, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a receptacle having oppositely disposed depressions, of a closure for the receptacle, said closure comprising a top and a base, the top being oi a larger diameter than the base, said top and base being connected together, the top having a keyhole slot, oppositely disposed sliding bolts carried by the base, a pair of spaced guides for each of the slidino bolts, the inner member of each of the guides being of a lesser diameter than the outer member, resilient elements connected with each of the bolts to normally force the same beyond the perimeter of the closure, said resilient elements adapted to contact the outer members of the guides to limit the outward movement of the bolts, means upon the base for limiting the inward movement of the bolts, the base member being centrally provided with a depression, the said base being further provided with a radial slot communicating with the depression, and the inner faces of the bolt being provided with key-receiving depressions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
