IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO, HAY, AND COTTON-PRESSES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sa.;

To lall whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, VALENTINE J. SHnYocK, of Folsomville, in the county ot" Warrick, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressfor Pressing Tobacco in Hogsheads, and Baling Hay and Cotton; and do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a press for pressing tobacco in hogsheads, and for baling hay and cotton.

In order to enable others'skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and usev the. same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referringr to the annexed drawings, in which-l Figure l is a side elevation, and,

Figure 3 is a vertical section of the box for baling hay or cotton.

The standards B B are further braced by suitable inclined cross-beams I) I), and from the upper end of each standard, extends forward a horizontal beam, E, supported by the brace F, from or on the brace C.

0n the bed A, between the standards B B and braces C C, are laid two bars, G G, which f orm atrack for the carriage H. This carriage is composed of two bars, placed parallel with each other, and connected with cross-bars of such length that the parallel bars will be on the outside of the track G. Between the bars of the carriage, are placed rollers, which rest on the track G.

On the carriage H, or rather' on the rollers in the carriage H, is placed a board, I, on which the hogsheads J J are secured.

Thel board I is, by means of ropes a a, connected with a windlass, K, so that it can be moved to either side, and thus bring the hogsheads under the press one after the other.

Across each hogshead J, isa bar, b, with slotted ends, and through these slots is placed a rod, d, which is secured to the edge of the board I, and at its upper end, provided with a loop, through which a wedge, e, is inserted. The centre of the-bar b is slightly concave, as seen in fig. l, for a purpose that will' be hereinafter described.

On the front side of the standards B B, a suitable distance below the horizontal bars E, are pivoted levers L L, which extend forward, and are each, by cords ff, connected to a windlass, M.

Another cord or rope, h, runs from each of said levers upward, around a pulley, t', in the front end of the horizontal bar E, and is also connected with the windlass M. The ropes fand h are so arranged, that by turning the windlass in one direction, its lever will be lowered, and by turning it in the opposite direction, the lever will .be raised.

At a suitable point on each side of each lever L, are secured plates g, between which is pivotcd a camshaped bar, N, which, when the leverL is lowered by the windlass M, as above described, will bear against the bar b, on top of the hogshead, and press the t0- bacco in the same.

The windlass M may be provided with a ratchetwheel, k, and pawl o, to prevent it from turning in the wrong direction, and relieve the pressure on the tobacco before desired to do so.

The two levers L L may be so arranged, each with its windlass, as that one of them will give more pressure than the other, thus bringing each hogshead un der the light press first, and then under the other. This may be accomplished by placing. the inner pivoted ends of the levers L L at different heights o'n the standards B B, or b y making the levers or the camshaped bars N N, of different size.

The'above-described press may be used for baling hay and cotton, by simply removing the hogshcads J J and substituting the box O, and by removing the cam-shaped bar N and substituting the plunger P. The b ox O is inclined at its upper end, toiit between the standard B and brace G, and is slotted on its rear side,v to allow the lever L to pass ,through the same.

When used for pressing or baling hay and cotton, my machine can readily be mounted upon four wagonwheels and moved to any place where it is 'desired to use the same.

Having thus fully described my invention,

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The arrangement, upon the bed A, between the standards B B and braces C C, of the track G, cal'-,

riage H, and board I, the latter connected, by the ropes a c, to the windlass K, substantially as andv for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The arrangement or the rods d d, slotted bar b, and wedges e c, for the purpose of holding the hogshead on the board I, when pressing the tobacco, substantially as herein set forth.

3. In combination with the devices herein described,

for moving and holding the hogsheads J J, the windlasses M M, ropes ff and h h, levers L L, and. camshap'ed bars N N, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
