IMPROVEMENT I N PRESS FOB. GOMPRESSING BALES ALREADY PORMED.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Y l I Be it known that we,'FREDERIcK F. CORNELL, Jr., an l`Enw1N M. WIGHT, both of the city, ccunty,vand State of New-York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in that Class of Piiesses designed for Compressing Bales already Formed, or for pressing -goods or substances that requirerno box or press-chamber to retain t'hem in position while being subjected to compression.V
Thc'objects and designs of ourH invention are, first, to secure Vin a press not provided with a permanent press-box or bale-chamber, a new and useful method of construction by means of which the frame usually required to receive the resistance occasioned by the action of the toggle-joints or levers upon the platen, may be entirely dispensed with; second, to obtain a convenient arrangement of the toggle-joints and levers above the head-beams of the press, and to suspend the platenby rods or bars passing down from. the shanks of the levers and through or between said head-beams' to connect with the same; third, to support said head-beams and the superiucumbent toggle-joints and levers by posts, so arranged that' they shall serve as guides to control the motion of the platen, and also sec-ure the proper relative position between the said head-beams and the sills of th'e press; fourth, to so construct the levers used for operating the press, that when the toggle-joints'are open to the greatest extent allowed by their arraiigement, a horizontal plane passing longitudinally through the l i sills of the press would cnt the lower ends of each of said levers at the points where power is applied to drawthem down; fifth, a new and useful method of.governing the motion of the upper ends or Shanks of the togglelevers, and of retaining the draw-rods of the platen in a perpendicular position by means of a vertical guide, placed above and over the centre of the Apress,and controlling a slide which is connected to each of the levers and is retained equally distant from each by horizontal bars, the levers being also permanently connected Vto each other by'means of said bars; sixth, providing the lower ends of the draw-rods at either end of the press with stirrups to receive the ends of the lifting-beam, or beams of the platen, and in and upon which they may rest and move loosely, so that by the introduction of suitable blocks of the required thickness, between the foot of the stirrups at either end, and the said beamfor beams, or by any other suitable mechanical device, which will increase or diminish, as required, the distance between the said stirrups'and the ends of the lifting beam l or beams before mentioned, any requiredheight' may be given to Vthe bale when the toggle-joints are oben to their greatest extent. v The following is a full and exact description of our invention, so that thoseskilled in the art may bel enabled to make and use the same. In constructing this new forni of press, we securely frame together the ground sills A A, insuch a manner that they may receive the guido sheaves a a, I li, and resist any pressure that may be exerted upon them by means of the chains c c, and also serve the further purpose of supporting the entire superstructure of the press. At suitable distances apart to receive the bale or substance to be pressed, we erect the four posts B B B, two on either sill, and on the upper ends of said Aposts place the head-beams C C, to which are securely fastened the necessary facings, braces, ttc., to form a secure and perfect head-block, and securing the whole structure rmly together by the girt-bolts d d d d. Longitudinallyv between said posts we place the lifting beam D of the platen, which is of such a length as to extend through or nearly through the openings between them, and upon the upper lside o'f said lifting beam wc place the facings of the platen so as to conform to the facings of the head-block, and extend them through' between the posts B B B B, making notches in thc same at e e c e, so that the said posts may. serve as guides, and thc edges of the facing or the main timbers ofthe platen perform the duty of slides against said posts to ltcep therplaten from, swinging when under pressure. 0n the upper faces of the heed-beams lC C, or the corresponding portion of thc head-block, over the ends of the posts B B B B, we

To the lower ends of` the levers we attach ropes or chains, which pass under and around the guide-sheaves a a, b Ii, and are th'us delivered to the capstan, or they may be operated in any other convenient way. The operation of the press is as follows: The height of the finished compressed mass having been determined by the introduction'between the stirrups c and Z, and the lifting beam D, of the blocks z'of the required thickness, (sets of blocks of various thickness being furnished with the press,) the bale or material to be pressed is placed upon the platen, and power being applied at the outer ends of thechains c c, to draw them from the sills A A, by means of a capstan or any other desirable method, the lower ends of the levers arecaused to move vinward 'towards the ends ofthe sills, thus turning them on their centrepins gg, and causing the shank, with the pins L h attached, to ascend, thus drawing on the rods G G Gr G, which, by the connections before explained elevate the platen, which presses on the bale or material which is again firmly resisted by the headblocl; until it has been reduced to the required density. The Shanks of the levers, while ascending, are firmly controlled by the slide I- 'moving freely between the guides K K, and acting upon said shanks by means of the horizontal bars HH, which retain theiu motion in right and. perpendicular lines.
The advantages we claim 'for this mode of construction are, that we entirely dispense with the cumbersome frame usually necessary to retain the material, and the compressing mechanism in the proper juxtaposition during the process of pressing; again, that by causing the compressing mechanism oh the one side of the headf beams'or head-block to operate with a power which is equally balanced by the resista-nce of the material on the platen on the other side of said head-beams or head-blocks, the strain on thepress is greatly diminished, and much cost and material can be saved in the construction; also that by the arrangement of the platen and the draw-rods, by means of which the height ofthe compressed mass may be varied, the great andonly valid objection to the use of levers for such purposes is entirely removed; and lastly we secure a perfect control over the movements of each of the levers by means of a slide and guide which regulate their motion.
What we claim as o ur invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The use, in a press designed for the vcompressing of bales already formed, or of goods requiring no press-box to retain them in position between the platen and the head-block, and not provided with sidesor ends for the purpose of forming such chamber or press-box, of toggledevers, the fixed fulcrum points of whose radii are located above and upon the head-block or head-beams of the press.
2. The use, in a toggle-lever press not provided with 'permanent 'sides or ends, for the purpose of forming a press-chamber, of a platen suspended bymeans of rods or bars passing down through the head-block, or between the head-beams thereof from the ends or shanks of toggle-levers located on and above said head-blocker the beams thereof. Y' i rl'he use, in a toggle-lever press not provided with permanent sides or ends, of posts located, two at either end, and so arranged that while serving as supports for the head-block, and its superincumbent weights, they shall also act as guides to retain the motion of the platen in right lines by engaging with suitable notches or slidesin the saine, substantially as hereinbefore described'. 4. The use, in a toggle-lever press having the fixed fulcrum points of the radii of the levers thereof located on and above the head-block or the beams thereof, of a vertical guide attached to' the centre ofsaid head-block, and furnished with a slide provided with horizontal bars attached thereto, and extending to and connected by joints 'with the Shanks of the toggle-levers on either side, and so arranged as'to prevent the same from altering their relative position, and to retain their motion in perpendicular and parallel-,lines when operating the platen.
