LIFTING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,366, dated November 30, 1886.

Application filed July 12, 1886. Serial No. 207,821. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES M. lVIONABB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boo'nsville, in the county of Wise and State of Texas, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Lifting Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices for raising fence-corners in repairing the same, and for lifting weights generally; and the object of my invention is to produce asimple and powerful device whereby a single operator can greatly increase his capacity for lifting heavy objects.

To the above purposes my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my improved weight-lifter. Fig. 2 is arear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof, partly broken away and in section to show details of construction.

In the said drawings, A Adesignate two heavy pieces of timber,which are inclined to ward each other, and the upper ends of which are connected by a stout metallic strap, B, the ends of said strap being lapped over the tops of timbers A,and bolted thereto,as shown at b. A hand-lev.er,F,is connected to the rock-shaft e by means of a pivotbolt, e, which passes through the lever and is secured in the said shaft 6, and the lever is capable of vertical movement with the shaft,

to adapt it to raise and lower heavy objects, and of a lateral movement on its pivot-bolt, so that it can be connected to and disengaged from the vertical rack-bar D. The short end of lever F is provided with a U-shaped metal piece, f, to which a chain, J, is attached,the said chain serving as the-means for attaching the object to be lifted to thelifting-lever. The long arm of lever F carries a plate, G, the projecting edge 9 of which engages the ratchetteeth (I of bar D, and thus holds the lever F in any desired position.

The device as thus constructed is particularl y adapted for raising the corners of fences for repairs, but is also capable of lifting various heavy weights. By the addition of suitable front braces the supports A A may be made SeIfsustaining, so that the device may be used for holding carcasses to be dressed, &c.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a lifting-jack, the combination of the inclined uprights or standards, the straps secured to the standards at the upper ends and middle thereof, to connect the same together, the vertical rack-bar secured at its ends tothe said straps,the rock-shaft journaled in the uprights, the lever arranged on one side on the rack-bar, and pivoted on the rock-shaft by transverse pivot-bolt e, and capable of a vertical movement on the shaft and a lateral .movement on the pivot-bolt, the plate carried by the lever and projecting beyond one side thereof to engage the teeth of the rack-bar, and a chain connected to the shorter end of the lever, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
