Description

Letters Patent No. 98,364, dated December 28, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OI SHEET-IRON.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and. part of the same.
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, WILLIAM FIELDS, of the city .of Wilmington, in the county'of New Castle, State of Delaware, have invented a new and improved Method of Making SheetJron, in imitation-of the Russia sheet-iron; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of; the construction of the same. 7
- I take one hundred pounds of Franklinite iron and four hundred pounds of good pig-iron, as the proportion of my mixture. When melted together and rolled, after the same has. been scaled, I run each sheet through a mixture of the flour of zinc, one part, black lead, one part, with suificient tallow, when hot,
. to make the mixture of the consistency of cream.
Each sheet is drawn. through this mixture, and, when cold, three sheets are fastened together by clamps, and put under the steam-hammer, having a hardwood face, to the anvil, and also a hard-woodface to the hammer, the grain of the wood being set vertieallyin both the anvil face and face of hammer. This wooden facing gives the iron its mottled appearance.
I do not claim the use of the black lead and tallow as my invention, as these have heretofore been used;
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' 1. The mixing the irons, as hereinbefore set forth, and the use of the flou'r'of zinc in the finishing of the same. I
2. The use of the flour of zinc, in combination with the black lead and tallow, in the finishing of the iron, as hereinbeforc described.
3. The application of the wooden faces to the steam-hammer and its anvil when used for the purpurpose of finishing iron.
4. Making and finishing sheet-iron, using all the articles as a combination as hereinbefore specified.-
' WILLIAM FIELDS.
