titul %states Letters Patent No.-98,344, dated December 28, 1869.
IMPROVED KING-BONI' F OR RAILWAY-CAR TUCKS.
The Schedule :efe ''ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conoern:
Be it known thfat I, JAMES M. BUKLIN, of St.
Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in IKing-Bolts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making' a -part of this specilication, and to the letters and fignresof reference marked thereon.
Figure 1, of the drawings, is a top view of my invention. i
Fgure 2 is a central vertical section of same.
Figures 3 and 4 are details.
Figures 5 and 6 are modifications of bolt.
My invention relates to the mode of connectiug the trucks to railroad-cars, and consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arangement of devices, whereby the head of the king-bolt is made to rest on the transoin, and the disconnection is made by dropping the bolt through the transon.
' -The objections to the king-bolt now in use are serious. This bolt rests upon the floor of the car, 'and Gonsequently the' car, if a freight-car, and loaded, must be nnloaded, or the freight shifted, in order to get at the head of the bolt. i
if, by any accident, the lower part' of the bolt is bent, it is clenched, and cannot bedrawn out through the centre bearings.
It frequently happens, both on the road and in the shops, that the trucks of both passenger and freightca's cannot *be changed without lifting the body of Ithe 'car high enough to clear the end of the kingolt.
These, and many other difliculties are all obviated in the king-bolt' which I have designed, as will bemade evident by the following description.
The letter A of the drawings designates the transom;
B, the bolster of the truck; and
c, its centre bcaring-plate.
a designates the head-plate, attached to the top o" the t'anson by four bolts and nuts, which also secure the centre plate g under the transom.
The head-plate a is formed with an oblong slot through it. i
This slot, which is let-tered e in the drawings, extends entirely through the transom and its 'under bearing-plate. i
- A transverse shallow cavity, i, is fonned at the commencement of the slot e in the head-plate, of sufiicient depth to contain the'oblong solid head of the kingbolt z.
n designates a cover, made to slide in a'dovetail groove formed in the top of the head-block.
This cover prevents the king-bolt from j unping, and therebybeeoming disarranged.
Instead of the solid oblong-headed bolt just described, I sometimes make use of the bolt now employed, by cutting off its round head, and: substitnting therefor the key and 'round Washer, 'or the collar, washer, and split pin, passingthrough bolt and collar. v e
When it is required to release the bolt z from the body of the car, and detach the truck, the head of the bolt is raised above the cavity i, and turned one quarter around, until it drops into the slot a, and e through the transom, until it, rests upon the centre hearing c.
When the key-headed bolt or collar-headed bolt,
above described, is cmployed, no lead-plate is neces- I sary. V
In my improvement, the bolt being easily accessible outside the car, no delay can occnr in disconnecting,
as there is nothing to prevent the bolt from being dropped down through the transom at pleasure.
Over Seven pounds of iron may be saved in each bolt, in consequence of its shortness, as coupared with the bolt now employed, which is designed to extend,
from the car-floor through the transon, and through the bolster of the truck.
The slot e is arranged so that its sides are cut by central circular grooves, to fit the cyliudrical shank ot' the king-bolt,*and keep it in the centre of the slot.
79 designates a set-screw, arranged to fasten the cover q in place.,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The king-bolt z, arranged to' rest immediately ou nesses.
I JAMES M. BUGKLIN,
